BUFORD, Ga. – For 30 years, Slotin Auction has been the premier auction house bringing self-taught art, outsider art and folk art to the market. Its next sale, planned for Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6 and featuring 920 lots, is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and bring fun, affordable, colorful, creative pieces to the auction block. In addition, 50 lots included in this sale will benefit the Paradise Garden Foundation, which preserves Howard Finster’s famous fanciful environment and provides educational opportunities to art enthusiasts of all ages. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

This August sale includes some fantastic examples of self-taught art and antique and anonymous folk art. Highlights include Adam and Eve with Apple Tree and Snake by Edgar Tolson, from the prestigious Elinor Horwitz collection, estimated at $3,000-$5,000; three strong early works by Joseph Yoakum, which appear as lots 27-29, with estimates ranging between $5,000 and $12,000; and strong memory paintings by Mattie Lou O’Kelley, which comprise lots 30-32 and have estimates between $2,000 and $4,000.

Proceeds from 50 lots in this sale will benefit the Paradise Garden Foundation. Paradise Garden is a historic art environment created by the most famous 20th-century contemporary self-taught artist, the Rev. Howard Finster. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Paradise Garden is located in the small rural town of Summerville, Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. CNN called it “The South’s most inspired garden,” and it is considered one of the top 10 art environments in the world.

More than 50,000 patrons have visited Paradise Garden from 33 counties since it was purchased by Chattooga County in 2012. Today, it serves as a nonprofit regional art center and is one of two major economic drivers for the impoverished and economically depressed Appalachian region of Georgia. Programming includes an art museum and a visitors center, year-round tours, children’s art camps and workshops, adult art classes and art exhibitions.
