Snap judgment: no duds in Doyle’s June 21 Photographs sale

NEW YORK – Doyle will present an auction of Photographs on Tuesday, June 21 at 10 am Eastern time, showcasing fine examples spanning the history of the genre, from early photographs to contemporary works. The sale also includes a small selection of photobooks. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The sale is arranged in alphabetical order by artist, with photographic literature at the end. A circa-1935 Ansel Adams vintage print, Indian Property near Palm Springs, Cal. carries an estimate of $2,000-$3,000. It is preceded by two Berenice Abbots and succeeded by a half-dozen Lucien Aigner images, including large prints of several of his studies of Albert Einstein, among them a 1940 gelatin silver print of the science legend with a pipe in his mouth. It is estimated at $1,500-$2,500.

A large Tina Barney work from 1985, The Reception, occupies lot 22; this very copy was exhibited at the Whitney Biennial in 1987. Its estimate is $4,000-$6,000. Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Harry Callahan, Diane Arbus, Ray Metzker, Thomas Struth, Paul Caponigro, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Edward S. Curtis, Walker Evans, Gisele Freund, Lewis Hines, Horst P. Horst, Andre Kertesz, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Vivian Meier, Joel Meyerowitz, Richard Misrach, Tina Modotti, Eugene W. Smith, Ralph Steiner, Jock Sturges, Carleton E. Watkins and Weegee appear in the lineup as well.

Bruce Davidson’s scarce portfolio Central Park in Palladium is offered with an estimate of $15,000-$25,000, and Helen Levitt’s lovely study of a young woman, Girl with lily, is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

One of the highpoints of the sale is Andres Gursky’s 1966 study of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Atlanta, one of six examples of this extraordinary (and enormous) print by the great Dusseldorf photographer. It has an estimate of $150,000-$250,000.

Robert Mapplethorpe, another quintessential New York photographer, is present in the form of his double portrait of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson, which is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Karl Struss’s beautiful Pictorialist 1922 study Near San Luis Obispo is offered with an estimate of $8,000-$12,000, while a pair of William Wegman large-format Polaroids from 1981, Good Dog, (Angel) and Bad Dog, (Devil), presented as one lot, carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

In a run of material by the Weston family, a highlight is a complete copy of Edward Weston’s Fiftieth Anniversary Portfolio: 1902-1952, which appears in the June 21 sale with an estimate of $60,000-$90,000. It is rare to encounter the Weston portfolio intact, as so many sets have been taken apart.
