Song Dynasty vase, Steinway piano are high notes in Capo sale July 25

NEW YORK – New York’s Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques in Long Island City will host their mid-summer auction on Saturday, July 25, beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide absentee and Internet live bidding.This month’s sale will spotlight rare Asian items, a unique Steinway piano (above) and an impressive selection of fine and contemporary art, along with unique decorative items, bronze and furniture.

A rare Chinese Song Dynasty vase is already generating much attention. It has applied stylized animal handles, globular body with raised decoration. It is accompanied by a thermoluminescence report from Archeolabs TL in St. Bonnet de Chavagne, France, stating its age is compatible with the presumed period.

Another standout is a 24-inch Charles Anfrie (French, 1833-1905) Estafette patinated bronze, signed and inscribed “Salon des Beaux Arts, 1888” in the plinth.

Featured in the fine art arena is an oil on canvas attributed to Sir Godfrey Kneller (British, 1646-1723) Portrait of a Young Man, 33 by 26 inches. The framed painting is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

As Capo Auction forays more into contemporary art and modern photography, they are offering a Robert Rauschenberg (American, 1925-2008) Calf Startena (from “Chow Bag series”), mixed media collage lithograph, 1977, signed, dated, and numbered 77/100, 48 1/8 x 36 3/8 inches, mounted and framed. The work is estimated at $3,000-$4,000. Also featured is an Andre Plessel (German) photograph titled Stranded Alone No. 1, Lanzarotte 2006,’ 20 by 24 inches, black and white silver gelatin print (below).
