Sophisticated art awaits at Willow’s March 10 auction

LINCOLN PARK, N.J. – Willow Auction House will present its March Curated Spring Fling Estate Auction on March 10, beginning at noon Eastern time. Consisting of more than 200 lots, the sale features furniture, artwork, silver, rugs, decorative objects, and a large selection of religious and ethnographic items, including pieces from the collection of Louis Pierre Ledoux. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The artwork in the sale includes two oils on canvas by Milt Kobayashi, three silver gelatin prints by Berenice Abbott, a conte crayon drawing from Donald Sultan and several Keith Haring items.

Other standouts include a large abstract by New York artist Stanley Boxer, titled Duskhurrahing and estimated at $3,000-$4,000; and Charles Levier’s beguiling undated painting Le Lilles Aux Fleurs, estimated at $2,000-$3,000. Levier was prominent throughout the 20th century, and the painting, an oil on canvas depicting two women on a busy street, is a wonderful example of his work.

Leading the selection of decorative items are lots 100 and 101, two large Meissen porcelain ewers, one depicting air and the other water, each estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Another highlight is a Zsolnay vase designed by Friedrich Adler and estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Made of eosin-glazed earthenware with gilt pewter mounts, the iridescent vase is one of only a few hundred pieces produced by the German metalwork factory Orion.

The auction also includes a selection of mid-century and Danish modern furniture, including pieces by Carl Hansen & Son, Arne Hovmand-Olsen and Harvey Probber. A Diplomat Series desk by Finn Juhl, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, is another delight. Bidders will also thrill to an Akari floor lamp designed by Isamu Noguchi, estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

A large selection of oak furniture, including map cabinets, card catalogs and files, appears in the sale lineup. Of particular note are four Globe-Wernicke barrister bookcases, including one five-stack and three six-stacks. Each of the four bookcases is individually estimated at $600-$800, and all have their original paper labels. Lot 84, a mission oak gun cabinet estimated at $800-$1,200, is another prize.

Rounding out the sale are jewelry, silver, rugs, and a collection of ethnographic and religious items, including Qur’an folios, bronze buddhas and several Keris.
