HUDSON, N.Y. – On Friday, Jan. 25, Stair Galleries will present an Art & Design auction – a mix of styles that reflect how we live today – rustic and refined, classic and contemporary, old and new. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Stair’s Art & Design sales blend objects in juxtaposition to create interesting combinations of furniture, fine art and objects that are affordable and easy to live with. Mid-century chairs around a rustic farm table or an oversized black and white photograph over a beautifully upholstered sofa speak to today’s design trends and offer easy up-styling for any room.
The 254-lot catalog is laid out in groupings that mix-and-match styles, colors and materials to create room vignettes designed to provide inspiration for a quick room-makeover or a future redecorating project.
Furniture ranges from a Gustav Stickley wrought iron-mounted oak fall front to a Gyre lounge chair designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) in 2006. The latter is from Established & Sons’ Seamless Collection. The chair was part of a small collection of furniture that was Hadid’s first interior furnishings created independently from an architectural project. Hadid is best known for her unconventional architectural designs whose construction seems to defy logic through its sweeping forms and shifting geometry. The Gyre lounge chair incorporates the same organic forms and free-form shapes that Hadid used in her buildings, testing the relationship of design and function. The chairs were made in an edition of 12 as part of the Seamless Collection and were manufactured by the London-based design firm Established & Sons using a combination of polyester resin with a polyurethane lacquer to create their smooth, fluid surface. According to Zaha Hadid Design, the Gyre chair “seeks to reinvent the traditional spatial relationship between furniture and its setting.” An example of the Gyre chair is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
A classic example of Dale Chihuly art glass is featured in the auction: a large four-piece Sea Form (below).
Ceruse is a decorative wood finish that applies pigment to open grains. The pigment applied to a Chinese-style ceruse oak chest of drawers is a pale pink, which continues to be in vogue. Made by Albert Furniture, the chest contains two short drawers over four long drawers and has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.
More than two dozen paintings are offered in the auction including a large unframed oil on canvas by Joe Andoe (American, b. 1955) that silhouettes a pair of birds in flight.
Lighting is led by a pair of brass-mounted glass lamps in the manner of Fontana Arte. The table lamps stand 28 tall.
Furniture pieces designed by Frank Gehry, Eero Saarinen, Ettore Sottsass, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames are also available in the auction, which begins Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
