LOS ANGELES – Julien’s Auctions will celebrate the life and career of legendary Jerry Lewis, the late “King of Comedy” as part of their two-day Hollywood Legends auction event June 22-23. The auction will be held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the city where Lewis made his mark as one of greatest nightclub performers of all times. Property from the estate of Jerry Lewis will feature a stunning collection of Lewis’ watches including his 18K yellow gold Cartier watch from the Baignoire collection, circa late 1960s to early 1970s (estimate: $25,000-35,000); an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe pocket watch gifted to Lewis from the ABC Television Network engineering crew (estimate: $10,000-$15,000); an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe given to him by Sammy Davis, Jr. engraved on the back “To Jerry From Sammy Jr.” (estimate: $6,000-$8,000); a 14K yellow gold Le Coultre watch given to him by Dean Martin and inscribed “Jerry My Buddy/ and Pal/ I Love You/ Dino,” (estimate: $4,000-6,000).
Also featured are a 14K yellow gold cigarette case topped with a high relief image of Carmen Miranda with engraved initials, “J.L.” (estimate: $2,000-$4,000) and a 14K yellow gold lighter with a high-relief caricature of Lewis in his clown makeup (estimate: $1,500-$3,000).
Lewis’s wardrobe and props from The Nutty Professor include a trio of vintage prop black frames including reading glasses in the style Lewis wore in his film with painted eyeballs on the lenses (estimate: $2,000-$4,000); a collection of custom funny teeth (estimate: $2,000-$4,000) made for Lewis in a custom-built box featuring Lewis’s face in relief as his character Prof. Julius Kelp; and a custom-made tweed burgundy suit worn by Lewis in the 1963 film (estimate: $2,000-$4,000).
Julien’s Hollywood Legends auction on June 23 includes more than 500 rare pieces of Hollywood and entertainment history and features the James L. Schoppe Star War: Return of the Jedi Production Archive.
Headlining this event is Harrison Ford’s “Han Solo” hero blaster movie prop used in the original Star Wars trilogy film Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (Twentieth Century Fox, 1983). This presentation of one of the most iconic sci-fi weapons in the history of film comes upon the 35th anniversary of the film’s release and will highlight the exhibition and sale of the never before seen Collection of “The James L. Schoppe Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Production Archive.” Offered for the first time, the blaster is estimated to sell around $300,000-$500,000.
Actor Harrison Ford as “Han Solo” is seen using the blaster in many scenes throughout Return of the Jedi. This original production-used BlasTech DL-44 blaster prop weapon was custom made specifically for the film, built on a metal nonfiring model version of the German Mauser C96 (“Broomhandle Mauser”) from MGC (Model Gun Corp.) of Japan with additional found parts and cast resin pieces added on. Julien’s Auctions believes this is one of four hero Han Solo blasters made for and used in the film. The production created one “practical” (blank fire) version and three nonfiring versions. Julien’s Auctions will offer one of the three non-firing movie prop weapons made for and used in the film. Once production was completed, the film’s property master, Peter Hancock, presented Art Director James L. Schoppe with the “Han Solo” blaster and other props. Schoppe has kept this blaster and his memorabilia archive intact for the past 35 years.
Roaring into Las Vegas will be a trio of motorcycles ridden by some of Hollywood’s most famous rebels that will burn up the auction stage including Henry Winkler’s 1949 Triumph Trophy TR500 motorcycle, one of just three Triumph motorcycles used in Happy Days (estimate: $150,000-$200,000); a 1969 Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide motorcycle owned by Marlon Brando (estimate: $150,000-$200,000) and a 1987 army-green Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic, with a color matched half helmet and pair of leather gloves owned by Arnold Schwarzenegger (estimate: $30,000-$50,000).
The auction will also feature a remarkable and intimate collection of personal items and ephemera from Marilyn Monroe, one of Hollywood’s greatest screen goddesses. Highlights include a three-quarter length figure- hugging black wool dress with knit ballet collar and long sleeves owned by Marilyn Monroe (estimate: $40,000-$60,000); her prayer book for Jewish worship with the cover stamped “Marilyn Monroe Miller” (estimate: $20,000-$30,000); her rhinestone dangling heart-shaped earring with three drops together with two fragment pieces of the matching pair (estimate: $20,000-$30,000) and a pair of drop rhinestone ear clips (estimate: $30,000-$40,000); an ivory silk Castillo for Jeanne Lanvin circa 1950s gown owned by Marilyn Monroe (estimate: $20,000-$40,000); and her black lace padded bustier labeled “Jantzen, original Curvallue, 36B.”
Other auction highlights include an original and rare full Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve in Superman III (Warner Bros., 1983) (estimate: $20,000-$40,000); a Playboy Bunny costume worn by meteorologist Valerie Voss from 1973 to 1974 when she worked as a waitress at the former Playboy Club (estimate: $3,000-$5,000); Donald Trump’s boardroom table from his reality competition show The Apprentice (estimate: $10,000-$20,000); a baseball signed by the cast of A League of Their Own (Columbia, 1992) with signatures of Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and director Penny Marshall, (estimate: $2,000-$3,000); a charcoal wool two-piece suit custom made by Brioni for Pierce Brosnan as James Bond worn in The World is Not Enough (Eon Productions, 1999) (estimate: $8,000-$10,000); a custom-made golden bodice with gold lamé embroidery worn by ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev during his performance on season two of The Muppets (estimate: $10,000-$20,000) and more. Also offered will be a collection of original Disney animation cells from such classics as Snow White (estimate: $3,000-$5,000).
