NEW YORK – A Rene Lalique chandelier, a hand-carved American eagle oak wall sconce, and a gorgeous Art Deco radio should rank among the top lots at Jasper52’s Decorative Arts, Collectibles, and More! auction, which will take place on Wednesday, December 21 at noon Eastern time. Other items in the 275-lot sale include several pieces of rattan furniture, some restored. Among them are a three-strand Circles and Speed living room set; a 10-strand Pretzel square settee sofa and, offered as a separate lot, an Art Deco square Pretzel lounge chair with ottoman; a four-strand, three-seat corner sectional sofa by Paul Frankl; and a six-strand sectional sofa living room set with side tables, also by Frankl.
The December 21 sale lineup is notably rich in Mid-century Modern choices, such as a truly stunning Sputnik chandelier with more than 80 chrome rods jutting out from its chromed steel center; a set of six Lucite Skyscraper-style dining room chairs, upholstered in royal blue velvet; an Italian bar cart by Cesare Lacca; a circa-1960 Vistosi Murano glass chandelier; a two-tier sculptural brass cocktail table in the shape of the Eiffel Tower; and a pair of wooden Michael Van Beuren for Domus rocking chairs.
The first of the aforementioned highlights, an American eagle wall sconce hand-carved from oak, dates to circa 1880. It has a rectangular top supported by an eagle figure with spread wings that perches on top of a branch with leaves and acorns. It is estimated at $2,500-$3,000.
Equally if not more compelling is a Bande de Roses chandelier that was designed in 1924 by the famed French design wizard Rene Lalique. It features clear and frosted glass in a tapering circular form that is decorated with graduated bands of rose motifs and suspended from six braided cord strands. Its estimate is $48,000-$58,000.
The final highlight is an absolutely stunning piece of 20th-century consumer technology: a Sparton Model 500C Cloisonne Catalin radio, its design attributed to Walter Dorwin Teague. It sports a metallic blue cloisonne front, streamlined decorative chrome lacework, and ivory-colored Catalin knobs, which are original. The Art Deco radio is in full working condition and carries an estimate of $17,000-$20,000.
