New Yorker Sheila Isham (b. 1927-) is an accomplished artist whose color abstractions draw on a wide range of cultural aesthetics, from 20th-century European avant-garde approaches to Washington color school techniques. She is also deeply influenced by ancient Chinese calligraphy, Haitian animism and other styles that impacted her during her years of traveling the world with her diplomat husband. Isham’s Cosmic Myth – Eagle, a 68- by 78-inch depiction of an eagle soaring downward against an indigo sky, was exhibited in 1995 at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta. Its auction estimate is $1,000-$1,500.

An eagle is also the subject of a monumental wood carving that shows the majestic bird of prey in full, with spread wings atop a naturalistic carved-rock base. This massive artwork stands 77 inches high and 48 inches wide. The pre-auction estimate for this impressive work of art is $2,000-$3,000.

Nearly two dozen bronzes are included in the sale, with a number of high-quality European and American Western artists’ works appearing in the selection. There are several depictions of cowboys and Indians, with three bronzes after Remington, and others by Wally Shoop, Daro Flood and Gregory Perillo. Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr, Alan Shepard Jr, Edgar Mitchell and Michael Collins are among the astronauts shown. Other notables include Presidents Nixon and Johnson, legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh, and others, signing a memorial document. NASA identifications and descriptions are shown on the backs of the photos. Each lot is estimated at $200-$300.
