Superheroes swing into action in comic book auction April 24

NEW YORK – The first appearance of Black Panther is one of the key issues in a vintage comic book auction that will be conducted online by Jasper52 on Tuesday, April 24. Hundreds of comics will be sold in the 220-lot online-only auction. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Black Panther, the first superhero of African descent in mainstream American comics, first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966). Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist-writer Jack Kirby, Black Panther was made into a feature film, the first blockbuster of 2018. With noticeable wear to the cover, this Silver Age comic book (above) has a $345-$450 estimate.

Marvel awarded Black Panther his own titled comic in January 1977, which ran for 15 issues. The Black Panther #1 (below) in the auction is in fine condition and has an estimate of $42-$55.

Twenty lots of Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man, are included in the auction, most of which are single copies. An important comic book is #300 (May 1988), the “Special 25th Anniversary Issue.” This special 52-page comic, which features the debut of the character Venom, has a $388-$507 estimate.

The auction also features a legion of DC Comics superheroes, including Superman and Batman. A lot of 37 Superman comics (Second Series, 1987) ranges from #80 to #695 in very fine condition (est. $67-$88).

A lot of 37 Flash (1987 2nd Series) comic books from the series start to #228 is rated very fine (est. $112-147).
