OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery’s Feb. 25 sale will present numerous high-profile works spanning all categories at their Important Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry/Timepieces and Asian Art Auction. Also among the collections of note coming to this sale, will be the second installment of property from the Sterling Vineyard Winery Art Collection. Monterey Coast, a circa 1940 signed oil on canvas by Guy Rose, (American/French, 1867-1925) is expected to be the star at this sale. This painting was undoubtedly among the important works on display at the Huntington Museum during the time the institution was building the foundation of their important California Landscapes Collection. The exhibition label: “Huntington Library and Art Gallery Exhibition, March 1940,” is affixed on the verso. Monterey Coast will be offered with an estimate of $80,000-$120,000. This is an extraordinary work exemplifying Rose’s gift as the renowned Impressionist painter he was as well as his passion and interpretation of the beauty of the California land and seascape.
Red Haired Acrobat, 1944, by Modernist painter Walt Kuhn (American, 1877-1949), is also expected to headline this sale. This oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, measures 30 inches high by 24 inches wide and will be offered for $60,000-$90,000. Kuhn is renowned for his penetrating yet boldly simple portraits.
The highlight of the Decorative Arts & Furnishings category is an impressive Tiffany Studios Venetian desk lamp, circa 1910. This stunning work in American design will be offered with an estimate of $50,000-$70,000.
Featured prominently in the Modern furniture portion of this sale will be a Herve van der Straeten “Astrolab” patinated bronze chandelier that is estimated at $15,000-20,000.
Clars Auction Gallery will again feature works of fine art, decorative arts and furnishings from the private collection of Sterling Vineyards Winery, a collection which has been on international tour for the past three years. Approximately 700 pieces will be offered over the course of the upcoming year, 90 percent of which was part of this curated exhibition.
Among the fine art highlights to be offered on Feb. 25 will be the bronze sculpture titled Buste du Rieur au Pampre, by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875). Measuring 22.5 inches high, this work will be offered for $5,000-$7,000.
Highlighting the important Asian offerings will be a selection of Sino-Tibetan bronze Buddhist sculptures. Of particular note is a gilt bronze Amitayus that will be offered with an estimate of $10,000-15,000.
