Surrender to the appeal of fine pearl jewelry, June 6
NEW YORK – On Tuesday, June 6, starting at 2 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale of Fine Pearl Jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Pearls and brides have paired happily for centuries. Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II, donned a double-strand pearl necklace on her big day in 1947, and Jacqueline Bouvier wore a pearl choker when she said “I do” to John F. Kennedy in 1953. If the arrival of June has prompted you to seek adornments sourced from the deep, you’ll want to register for this auction.
The 117 lots deliver an education on the range and variety of colors in which pearls can be had. Jewelry featuring classic white pearls is always a solid choice, but the sale lineup promises to expand your horizons with pairs of earrings featuring pearls colored chocolate brown or deep gold; an 18K gold bracelet threaded with pink Edison pearls and golden South Sea pearls; and a trio of necklaces, offered as individual lots, that showcase standard Tahitian peacock pearls with a lustrous green shimmer; Tahitian peacock black pearls that sport their iridescence in a darker shade; and a string of Tahitian drop-shape peacock rainbow pearls that cannot help but catch the eye.
All three sale highlights happen to take the form of necklaces. First up is a single-strand piece showcasing golden South Sea pearls that carries an estimate of $15,000-$20,000. The lot notes state of the 17in necklace, “Emerging from the warm oceans of Australia, these pearls have been hand-selected for their top quality and their strongest Teri brightness and comes with an authenticity certificate issued by the Pearl Science Lab of Japan.”
Also demanding mention is an 18in single strand that features 37 South Sea pearls, some white and others in shades of gold. According to its lot notes, the pearls were “Produced by the gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima oyster in the warm waters off the coasts of Australia,” and were “hand-selected for their natural magnificent deep golden and white colors and for their eye-catching luster. The round pearls have a beautiful nacre quality and a clean surface.” The necklace is estimated at $9,000-$10,000.
Completing the highlights is an 18K gold necklace of white saltwater Akoya pearls, shown in a double-strand configuration and measuring 36in. As the lot notes explain, “The classic Akoya pearl is a type of cultured saltwater pearl originating from Japan and has a characteristically white color, with a cream overtone.” The piece is estimated at $3,200-$3,500.
