SUNRISE, Fla. – Hill Auction Gallery‘s next sale, titled A Juicy One & Joy Moos Gallery Auction, set for Wednesday, April 26, contains a particular standout. Chosen to lead the lineup as lot 1, the circa-1920 Armand Albert Rateau gilt swan sconces with Louis Comfort Tiffany shades carry an estimate of $8,000-$12,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The pair of sconces take the forms of gilt dore bronze swans with gracefully curved necks and outstretched wings, perched on elegant reeded bases and completed with period Louis Comfort Tiffany shades. The last time a similar pair was offered at auction was in December 2015, where they sold at a major auction house for a hammer price of $425,000.

The sconces date to circa 1920 and exemplify the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail that is representative of this transitional period, which lands between the twilight of Art Nouveau and the dawn of Art Deco. In their beaks the swans hold a drop chain with attached bronze bell forms that are in turn crowned by four figural moths or butterflies. The sconces also are enhanced by Louis Comfort Tiffany art glass shades, which create a warm and inviting glow when lit.

The swans are crafted from high-quality gilt bronze, a material that was popular during the Art Nouveau era for its warm golden hue and its ability to hold intricate details, such as the lifelike feathers and scale patterns adorning the swan’s bodies. The sconces are mounted on a rectangular gilt bronze backplate, which provides a secure and stable mounting surface for the fixtures.

French designer Armand Albert Rateau (1882-1938) was known for his organic flowing forms with ornate details. Both sconces have an A. RATEAU PARIS stamp to the bottom of the swans’ tails and are accompanied by Louis Comfort Tiffany golden tulip-form light lamp shades in a lustrous iridescent finish. Both shades are monogrammed L.C.T. and measure approximately 5 by 4 by 4in; each sconce measures 18 by 6 by 8in with their shades.
