SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Vogt Auction Galleries will present an auction of artwork, sculpture and pottery that pays homage to the legacy of Texas and the American West on Saturday, May 14, starting at 1 pm Central time. It will feature masterpieces by distinguished artists such as Jose Vives-Atsara, G. Harvey, Porfiro Salinas, John Nieto, Dawson Dawson-Watson and Helen Hunter. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Jose Vives Atsara’s compelling 1988 oil on canvas Old Village, Catalinas depicts the artist’s home village in Catalonia, Spain. This alluring and nostalgic piece carries an estimate of $28,000-$34,000.

Bluebonnet landscapes by artists Robert Harrison, Exa Wall, Randy Peyton, Santa Duran and William Slaughter will come to the auction block, led by a 1958 G. Harvey (aka Gerald Harvey Jones) piece rendering a warmly lit Texas Hill Country bluebonnet scene that has an estimate of $10,000-$12,000.

Slaughter’s contribution is undated and titled Bluebonnet Riverbank. The petite piece, which measures 11 by 14in unframed, is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

 John Nieto, ‘Dancing Warrior,’ est. $15,000-$25,000

John Nieto, ‘Dancing Warrior,’ est. $15,000-$25,000

John Nieto’s work reflects his Hispanic and American Indian ancestry tracing back more than 300 years. Nieto’s large and invigorating 1984 depiction of a dancing warrior is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Also of note is an undated Porfirio Salinas oil on canvas, dubbed San Jose Mission. Its estimate is $25,000-$32,000.

Enriched by the collections of former McNay Art Museum curator Jean Williams-Sherrill, real estate magnate Donald D.B. Harrell, former City of San Antonio Archaeologist Kay Hindes, and a collection of Carl Rice Embrey works pulled directly from the artist’s San Antonio home studio, Vogt’s May 14 Texas & Western Art auction is not to be missed.

In addition to the paintings mentioned above, the sale lineup features original artwork by Gary Lynn Roberts, Clark Kelley Price, Dalhart Windberg, Armado Maurillo Pena, Robert Wood, Rolla Sims Taylor, Sandy Scott and Harding Black.
