ALAMEDA, Calif. — A teapot by the New York silversmith Thauvet Besley (circa 1691-1757) is estimated at $1,500-$2,500 at Michaan’s Auctions on Friday, October 20.

Although he was born of Huguenot parentage in either Charleston, South Carolina or the city of New York, Besley (there are various spellings of his last name) worked in the Dutch tradition. Much of his training was done in London and then in Amsterdam, where he was admitted to the Silversmith’s Guild in 1715 and married in 1719. When he and his wife returned to Colonial North America, they joined the congregation of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York. Besley was made a Freeman of the city in December 1727 and used the mark of TB beneath a crown.

The Dutch were typically conservative, and this baluster-form vessel with a carved wooden handle was a form popular in the Low Countries in the first half of the 18th century. Dated to circa 1730, it has some later ownership inscriptions, including a series of monograms and the dates 1904 and 1876.

A Besley silver tankard is in the collection of the New York Historical Society and a pair of his tea caddies are in the Museum of the City of New York.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — This Revolutionary War-era powder horn — inscribed ‘John Hatch His Horn Made At Roxbury 1775’ — includes a rendition of a political cartoon that would have been well known to many American colonists at the time.

The Able Doctor of America Swallowing The Bitter Draught was first published in The London Magazine in April 1774. It depicts Lord North with the Boston Port Bill in his pocket, forcing tea down the throat of a partially draped native woman representing America. Her arms are restrained by Lord Mansfield, while Lord Sandwich, a notorious womanizer, restrains her feet while peeking up her dress. Britannia standing behind America turns away and covers her face in shame. The author is unknown, but his views were clear.

PHILADELPHIA – The original Egg chair was created by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Jacobsen was commissioned to design every element of the building and its furnishings, right down to the ashtrays and cutlery used in the hotel restaurant.

Just 50 first edition chairs were made for the hotel lobby in ox-hide upholstery. However, the Egg chair went on to have a life of its own as the signature product of the Danish design house Fritz Hansen. Fashioned in numerous different guises, the fully labeled pair of Egg chairs with matching ottoman offered by Kamelot Auctions includes the original upholstery from March 1973. They were removed from a home in upstate New York where they had been since they were new. Requiring some restoration, the suite is offered with an estimate of $2,000-$3,000 as part of Kamelot’s Wednesday, October 25 Design auction.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The cylindrical brushpot or bitong appears to have been introduced into the repertoire of Chinese ceramic forms in the late 1620s and continued to be produced in quantity into the Qing period. This 7in example offered by Brunk Auctions as part of an Asian Art Auction on Thursday, October 19 is in the style of wares from the Transitional period – the era (1620-83) when court patronage of the porcelain factory at Jingdezhen had all but dried up. Instead, ceramics were made for merchants, scholars and for export with production far more diverse than during imperial times. Blue and white narrative decoration, often painted with episodes from China’s literary epics, was particularly popular. Incised anhua bands were often seen on Transitional wares.

This piece, which was consigned by a vendor in California, has a label for Elinor Gordon (1919-2009), the well-known Pennsylvania dealer in Chinese porcelain. It is estimated at $1,200-$1,800.

NEW ORLEANS – This suite of Rococo Revival rosewood furniture was once part of a larger set of bedroom furniture made for Duncan Farrar Kenner (1813-1887) and probably purchased from the famed New Orleans retailer Prudent Mallard.

Kenner, whose family resided at Ashland Plantation in Darrow, Louisiana, was the owner of numerous sugar plantations. He served several terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives and was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1845 and 1852.

Probably made in New York, the Kenner family bedroom suite is believed to have originally been more than twice this size, comprising a pair of half tester beds, a pair of armoires, a pair of dressing tables, a pair of washstands and a pair of dressers. One of the armoires is illustrated in American Furniture of the 19th Century 1840-1880 by Eileen and Richard Dubrow.

The set was eventually split up among family members, with these three pieces appearing at auction as part of the Major Estates Sale at New Orleans Auction Galleries on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15 with an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.
