The auction, titled It’s More Than Rock ’n’ Roll Reprise, is composed of lots that did not sell in the auction company’s two sales in September.
Lennon inscribed the lyrics to the song on a slice of tree trunk, which he likely brought back from India in 1968 when he and his fellow Beatles studied under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The slice of fruitwood, typical of Indian market souvenirs, bears a striking resemblance to Lennon’s profile. Lennon is said to have written the song to express his disappointment in failing to find enlightenment from the Maharishi. This piece of rock ’n’ roll history is expected to bring $90,000-$110,000.
Another choice lot is the score for “Blue Suede Shoes” used in Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Special television show. Signed by Elvis Presley Charlie Hodge, Joe Esposito and D.J. Fontana, the sheet music is expected to bring $15,000-$20,000.
The Fame Bureau is a London auction house specializing in rock ’n’ roll memorabilia. At their auction Sept. 4 a guitar played by Jimi Hendrix sold for more than a half million dollars. Hendrix set fire to the Fender Stratocaster using lighter fluid during a performance in Britain in 1967.
Many of the reserve prices in the It’s More Than Rock ’n’ Roll Reprise Auction have been lowered from the first auctions, giving buyers a better opportunity to have a winning bid, said company spokesman James Wilkinson.
