THOMASTON, Maine – Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will kick off their Summer 2020 season with a two-day auction of important fine art and antiques on July 18-19. This sale will offer an amazing array of rare and one-of-a-kind items gathered from estates since last fall. Out of an abundance of caution in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sale will be conducted as a live virtual sale, with telephone, absentee and internet bidding. “We are excited to reopen and sell the great many fabulous objects we have collected over the past six to eight months. We are working hard to adapt to this new virtual format and make participating in the sale easy and fun for everyone,” said Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux.

The sale will include a pleasing mix of traditional and modern art. Traditional artwork will be led by two monumental, charming 19th Century portraits of children – one by Joseph Goodhue Chandler (Mass./N.Y, 1813-1884) and another by David Broderick Walcott (Ohio, 1825-1885). There will also be paintings by Otto Sommer (N.Y./Germany, 1811-1911), Georges D’Espanet (France, 1870-1950), Louis Jambor (N.Y./Hungary, 1884-1955), Jean Dufy (France, 1888-1964), Josef Israels (Netherlands, 1824-1911), Wilson Henry Irvine (Conn./Ill., 1869-1936), Theodore Rousseau (France, 1812-1867), and Charles Louis Heyde (Vt., 1822-1892). The sale will also present fine marine paintings by Rudolph Andersson (19th–20th century Denmark), William Pierce Stubbs (Maine/Mass., 1842-1909), Theodore Weber (Germany, 1838-1907), Joseph Heard (UK, 1799-1859), and Clement Drew (Mass., 1806-1889).

The contemporary collection will include: two drawings by Keith Haring (N.Y./Pa., 1959-1990); Moon Over a Peninsula, an oil painting by Leon Dabo (N.Y./France, 1864-1960); Screaming, an oil on Masonite work by Yuan Yuey Chinn (N.Y./China, 1922- ); a portrait of Painter Oskar Kokoshka by Jean-Paul Chambras (France, 1947- ); three painting by Melbourne Brindle (Conn./Calil./Maine/Fla./Australia, 1904-1995); plus works by Cig Harvey (Maine Contemporary), Ross Edward Dickinson (Calif., 1903-1978), Robert Indiana (Ind./N.Y./Maine, 1928-2018), James William “Bo” Bartlett III (Maine/Ga., 1955- ), and Mitch Billis (Maine/Mont., 1937- ).

There will be an outstanding selection of folk art and marine items, including carousel horses by Gustav Dentzel, Charles Carmel and Charles Looff; full-body cow and eagle weathervane; 17 ship models; and a several eagle plaques.

The diversity of furniture offerings will encompass a large group of Biedermeier period pieces, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Brno armchairs by Knoll, important Early American and Arts & Crafts furnishings, and outstanding modern and custom-made items.

Leading a large group of antiquities and Asian artifacts will be a life-size Roman marble statue of Asclepius, the god of medicine; a Cycladic marble tomb figure; and a 12th-15th century Cambodian Khmer carved sandstone head of Vishnu.

The sale will present an excellent group of fine ceramics and glass, such as a five-piece set of important glazed stoneware dishes by Arabia designer Birger Kaipianen (Finland, 1915-1988); a 17th century Italian Savona faience charger; several examples of early 20th century Scandinavian art pottery; and art glass by Venini/Murano, James Nowak, Phoenix Studios and Rene Lalique.

Among the firearms to be sold will be a fine pair of English Rowland & Watson shotguns, a rare Daniel King 2-pound cast-iron cannon, and a pair of 19th century silver flintlock pistols by London gunsmith John Blissett. Of historic interest will be a group of six World War II-era German vinyl invasion maps of the United Kingdom, and a set of 12 original color negative of Marilyn Monroe on a 1954 visit to entertain troops in Korea.

Other items of interest will include a circa 1900 Native American Plains beaded deerskin dress, a set of 12 18th Century School of Vilnius icons depicting The Twelve Apostles, an Art Deco-era Meriden silver-plated lighthouse-form cocktail shaker. Finally, the sale will present fine jewelry, estate silver, tea caddies and Oriental carpets.
