Thomaston Place plans full summer slate for July 7-9 auction

THOMASTON, Maine – Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Summer Splendor Sale, scheduled for Friday, July 7, Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9, beginning at 11 am Eastern time each day, will be packed with important artwork and decorative rarities. The sale will include large selections of American and European art, antique, custom and modern furniture, as well as jewelry and watches, estate silver, Asian artifacts, folk art and marine items, and art pottery. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Artworks by American artists will include a circa-1920 painting by Robert Spencer depicting Manayunk Canal swimming in Philadelphia, estimated at $100,000-$150,000; and a graphite study of pirates for Treasure Island by N.C. Wyeth, estimated at $12,000-$16,000. There will also be original works by Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, William Frederick De Haas, Stan Stokes, Gilbert Stuart, James Gardiner Babbidge, Thomas Hart Benton and William Matthew Prior.

A selection of outstanding Modernist art will also be sold, such as an impasto knifework painting of mountains under a sunlit sky by Etel Adnan, estimated at $50,000-$75,000; an untitled oil on linen abstract by Auguste Herbin; and an abstract watercolor on paper by Salvatore Scarpitta.

Important European paintings to be presented include Le Chariot d’Arras by Jean-Baptiste Corot, estimated at $80,000-$120,000; a summer landscape by Alfred Sisley; a 19th-century portrait of three cows by John of Colchester Vine; and several Old Master works.

The sale will also present a diverse group of folk art, featuring a drawing by outsider artist Bill Traylor of a dancing man and dog, estimated at $30,000-$40,000; a carved and painted Great White Shark plaque by Wick Ahrens; a handcrafted wooden fishing creel by Medway, Maine artisan Emil Robichaud; a fish painting by Southern folk artist Mose Tolliver; plus carved bird decoys, ship models, scrimshaw, nautical instruments and weathervanes.

Historic ephemera choices showcase a 1792 George Washington-signed letter; a George Washington personal wax seal; a 1796 Warren, Maine land deed signed by Henry and Lucy Knox; and multiple lots of photographs taken during Arctic expeditions of explorer, philanthropist, researcher, and teacher Donald Baxter MacMillan between 1923 and 1932.

The 183-lot collection of estate jewelry and watches will deliver many gem-set pieces, most with appraisals, plus wristwatches by Rolex, Cartier and Bucherer as well as a wide selection of pocket watches by American and European makers. There will also be an 18th-century English Chippendale tall clock with a chinoiserie-decorated surface and a 1920s-era French-made electric clock mounted in a frosted Deux Figurines Lalique art glass panel.

A 17th-century Italian walnut refectory table will lead the antique furniture selection, along with an English camphorwood campaign desk or chest, estimated at $2,000-$3,000; a circa-1890 Thonet bentwood chaise lounge, estimated at $1,000-$1,500; a 19th-century West Indian mahogany carved four poster bed; and a pine four-drawer farmhouse table. The sale will also offer a large offering of Danish Mid-century Modern pieces, such as a Papa Bear chair by Hans Wegner, estimated at $6,000-$8,000, and a Peter Nielsen rosewood desk, plus custom creations by Windsor Chairmakers, D.R. Dimes and Lawrence Crouse.

The sale will also include three art pottery vases by Brother Thomas Bezanson. A particular standout is a bulbous example with purple copper glaze, estimated at $2,000-$2,500. Also featured will be works from Grueby, Newcomb College, and Harrison McIntosh; fine porcelain by Herend, Sevres and Royal Doulton; and a collection of early mochaware. Leading the silver category will be flatware sets by Tiffany & Co. and Georg Jensen; a 183-troy ounce English Edwardian sterling tray by Elkington & Co.; plus multiple lots of Arts & Crafts period hand-wrought sterling, including several pieces by Pennsylvania silversmith Joel F. Hewes.

Featured among the large selection of Asian artifacts will be a 17th-century giltwood figure of a seated ascetic figure, estimated at $5,000-$7,500; a pair of huanghuali wood tables; a circa-1840 Japanese Edo period Samurai Kabuto helmet; and a Japanese Meiji period Maki-e lacquer picnic set.

Other items of interest will include three fine estate automobiles, among them a 2006 Jaguar XJ Super V8; a Cary’s 1816 terrestrial library globe on stand with an estimate of $4,000-$6,000; three English leather animal figures by Dmitri Omersa; and a large selection of vintage pieces of technology, including early cameras, projectors, music boxes, computers, glass slides, stereoviews and postcards.
