BOSTON – Skinner will host its 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts on June 27, 2009, offering more than 550 lots of furniture, decorative and utilitarian objects from the Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Mid-Century and Post Modern periods. The sale features a collection of timeless mid-20th century silver objets d’art and jewelry designed by Georg Jensen. Highlights include a Blossom coffeepot, covered sugar and cream pitcher (lot 215, est. $3,000/3,500); a pair of candelabra (lot 213, est. $7,000/9,000), a Caravel flatware set (lot 169, est. $2,500/3,500); and a sauceboat (lot 206, est. $1,800/2,000). Johan Rhode Georg Jensen offerings include two pitchers (lot 210, est. $5,000/7,000 and lot 186, est. $2,000/2,500); a Louvre bowl (lot 211, est. $1,000/1,500); and a Johan Rhode for Georg Jensen and William Seitz tea service (lot 214, est. $6,000/8,000).
The Georg Jensen jewelry selection includes a bracelet of two strands of interlocking links (lot 246, est. $400/600), a jewelry suite comprised of necklace no. 30A, bracelet 30, ring no. 73, earrings no. 49 (lot 258, est. $800/1,200); a ladies watch (lot 271, est. $500/700), and a keyring (lot 286, est. $400/600).
A highlighted collection in the sale features Modernist furniture from the late Dr. William S. Greenspon of New York. Dr. Greenspon was well known in the New York Arts community for his ability to flawlessly mix American folk and ethnographic art with Modernist furniture. Of note is an 11-piece Modernist dining suite (lot 170, est. $3,000/5,000); two Modernist tables after designs by Marcel Breuer (lot 204, est. $1,600/2,400); two machine age wall lights (lot 298, est. $600/800); and a Bauhaus-influenced wall clock (lot 297, est. $150/250).
For those collectors seeking important Tiffany Studios lamps, Skinner will offer a Peony table lamp on a Peacock base (lot 75, est. $70,000/90,000) and a Daffodil table lamp (lot 101, est. $50,000/60,000). Other Tiffany entries include a circa-1900 bronze and glass lamp (lot 107, est. $3,000/5,000), a paw-footed lamp base (lot 119, est. $10,000/15,000), and a Favrile table lamp (lot 91, est. $3,000/5,000).
For studio furniture enthusiasts, the Wendell Castle walnut hatstand 1972 is sculpturally appealing (lot 303, est. $15,000/20,000). Additional furnishings expected to draw significant attention include a Thomas Mosher walnut table (lot 309, est. $4,000/6,000); a Hans Wegner Papa Bear armchair and ottoman (lot 329, est. $3,000/5,000); five Finn Juhl chairs (lot 334, est. $1,500/2,500), and a Dakota Jackson credenza (lot 489, est. $3,000/5,000).
Since museums have begun actively collecting 20th-century cloisonné artworks and conducting exhibits such as the one at the Long Beach Museum, Joseph Trippetti works have received long overdue attention. Two excellent examples of Trippetti designs in Skinner’s sale include his Symphony (lot 409, est. $4/6,000) and Abstract (lot 412, est. $1,000/1,200).
