CRANSTON, R.I. – Three rare Tiffany Studios lamps from a private collection out of Houston, Texas, plus the contents of the Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Preservation Society’s Joseph Spaulding House are just a taste of what’s in Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ Estate Antiques & Fine Art Auction on Saturday, Sept. 22. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
More than 450 lots will come up for bid beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
“You name it, this sale has it,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. specialist and auctioneer. “From Chinese and Egyptian antiquities to Art Nouveau illustration and Modern Art, there is something for every collector. I can’t wait for those three Tiffany lamps to cross the block.”
They include a Tiffany blown-glass table lamp (above) with a 20-inch diameter Poppy shade of multicolored Favrile glass (est. $80,000-$120,000) and a Tiffany Studios allover Dogwood floor lamp, 63½ inches tall with a 22-inch diameter shade boasting variegated iridescent white Favrile glass petals (est. $90,000-$120,000). Both are impressed and circa 1910.
The auction will open with a 1929 Ford Model A closed cab pickup truck and a 1922 Ford Model T wood body depot hack truck. The latter, with green painted fenders and hood, a wood panel body and vinyl roof, has an inline four-cylinder engine. It’s had a fairly recent restoration and shows off a nicely finished body and detailed engine compartment (est. $8,000-$12,000).
The next portion of the catalog will feature over 143 lots of fine art and works on paper, to include an oil on canvas abstract painting by John Von Wicht (German-American, 1888-1970), from the living estate of Dr. and Mrs. Silverstein of Woodbridge, Conn. The signed work, titled Small Red Painting (1961), is 22¾ inches by 28¾ inches, framed (est. $2,000-$3,000).
Other fine art highlights will include an Impressionist oil on canvas painting of a Mediterranean harbor by Norris Rahming (American, 1886-1959); an early classical portrait painting of a girl by Charles Wesley Jarvis (American, 1812-1868); and a nocturnal landscape painting of a village by Robert Bruce Crane (American, 1857-1937). Artworks on paper include two original hand-colored etchings by John James Audubon (Haitian-American, 1785-1851), of pectoral sandpipers and ivory-billed woodpeckers. The latter has an estimate of $6,000-$9,000. Both are first-editions, published by Robert Havell, London.
The second portion of the catalog will offer 330 eclectic lots of antiques, Asian art, decorative arts and period American furnishings. The Asian category will be led by a pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty gilt bronze foo dog seals (below) with fine, hand-chiseled detailing, each 8½ inches tall, on a rectangular base (est. $3,000-$4,000); and a Chinese Qing Dynasty baluster form pink ground Yangcai famille rose vase, decorated with a lotus flower and tendril pattern (est. $2,000-$3,000).
American furnishings will feature a circa 1750 Queen Anne tiger maple chest with dovetailed case attributed to John Townsend (Newport, R.I.), with two over three graduated lipped drawers on a molded base, 37¼ inches tall (est. $3,000-$5,000). Decorative arts will be highlighted by a painted metal audio-kinetic ball machine sculpture by George Rhoads (American, b. 1926), having a dozen wind chimes striking within a xylophone-like midsection (est. $3,000-$5,000).
