Titans of Modern Design enliven Hindman’s Nov. 16 sale

CHICAGO – On November 16, Hindman Auctions will present its biannual Modern Design sale, which will offer outstanding studio craft furniture and other 20th and 21st century design. The auction will spotlight top American designers such as Wendell Castle, Dale Chihuly, Frank Gehry, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Sam Maloof, Peter Voulkos and Vladimir Kagan. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

American design standouts include pieces from the studio craft furniture movement. An exceptional set of five Zephyr chairs and a game table by Wendell Castle, estimated at $50,000-$60,000, is expected to be one of the top lots in the auction. Known as the leader of the studio furniture movement, Wendell Castle’s set demonstrates his meticulous craftmanship and innovation.

Another item representing the studio craft movement is a Sam Maloof rocking chair made of maple and ebony and estimated at $25,000-$35,000. Other highlights by Maloof include an important live-edge bench, estimated at $8,000-$12,000, and two side tables, each estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Other notable American design items include Frank Gehry’s Fish lamp, estimated at $20,000-$40,000, and Peter Voulkos’ Untitled Stack, estimated at $20,000-$30,000. A coffee table by Mira Nakashima is another stunning work; it carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000. Tables by design duo Philip and Kelvin LaVerne will also be included in the sale, such as an Eternal Forest coffee table estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

The sale will also feature remarkable Dale Chihuly works including a yellow-orange hornet chandelier, estimated at $30,000 -$50,000, and an emerald green and yellow Persian wall installation estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Iconic contemporary sofas will also be presented, including a Boa sofa by the internationally recognized Brazilian design team the Campana brothers. The brothers, Humberto and Fernando Campana, are the founders of Estudio Campana, and their work focuses on the environment and on reinvigorating commonplace materials. The Boa sofa is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

Highlights also include a strong session of American studio ceramics, including a collection of studio pottery by the movement’s most noteworthy artists: Warren MacKenzie, Harris McIntosh, Bernard Leach and Richard DeVore.
