Trio of Joan Miro works highlights Susanin’s auction March 21

CHICAGO – Susanin’s Auctioneers & Appraisers’ premier auction Saturday, March 21, features 545 lots of mid-century, antique and Asian furniture, Lalique, Steuben, Baccarat, Daum, Pairpoint and slag glass lamps, Asian art, African currency, tapestries, rugs and carpets, perfume bottles, silver, paintings, prints and sculpture.

Artists whose works are represented in the auction include Joan Miro, Leonardo Nierman, Andre Gisson, Jules Rene Herve, Alson Skinner Clark, Matt Lamb, Nikolai Blokhin, Antonio Zoppi, Bernard Buffet, Sergio Bustamante, Graciela Rodo Boulanger, Tunis Ponsen, Sy Rosenwasser, Bruce Stillman, Marc Chagall, Paul Wunderlich, William Lockhart, Wilbur G. Adam and Paul Strayer, along with many more.

Highlights of this auction include Joan Miro’s Le Permissionnaire. The work’s frame spans 62.5 inches by 45.5 inches and is both pencil signed and editioned 8/50 by the artist. The etching and carborundum on wove paper is brightly colored with aquatint. The piece identifies with the artist’s frequent use of abstracted surrealism and a simplified pictorial language. Lot 149-6015 has an estimate of $25,000-$30,000.

In addition to Le Permissionnaire, the March premiere auction will feature two supplementary pieces by Joan Miro. Summer (L’ete) 1938 is a rare impression of a large format edition. The color pochoir is 23in. by 17in. and is pencil inscribed “Gift of Junior School Faculty” (Art Institute of Chicago). It is lot 149-6058 and has a $5,000-$7,000 estimate. Untitled is signed in pencil, one plate From Espriu – Miro, 1976, edition 24/50. The etching and aquatint is set on wove paper and published by Sala Gaspar, with their blindstamp, Dupin. Lot 149-6141 carries a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.

The March premiere auction will be shown in Chicago throughout the week of March 16 with online and printed catalogs available.
