NEW YORK – Chip-carved tramp art items, weather vanes and folk art paintings are several of the more than 125 lots being offered in a Jasper52 online auction of Americana on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Nothing embodies Americana more than a figural eagle weather vane. The fine example offered in the Jasper52 auction (above) dates to the late 19th century and is over 2 feet long.
A fascinating curio being offered is a cast-iron display made by the L. Houston Co. of Montgomery, Pennsylvania. It consists of a heart-shaped weight (below) on a matching custom-made stand. The 1884-1885 dates on the weight correspond to patent dates for a circular saw manufactured by Levi Houston’s foundry and machine shop. It was used on a sawmill’s circular saw as a counterbalance. The rare relic has an estimate of $4,000-$4,500.
From the same era is a folk art checkerboard having a great surface and color faux marbleized trays.
The tramp art category in the auction is topped by a deeply Layered mirror frame from around the 1920s A large frame is heavily detailed with geometric patterning, a saw-tooth inner border, and the outer border has incised carvings. It is in excellent condition; no missing or replaced pieces.
American Indian art offered in the sale includes a 7½-inch Acoma pottery vase that dates to around the turn of the 20th century.
Original paintings include a 19th-century framed watercolor of the iron ship Great Eastern, which went “Sailing over the Atlantic.”
Baseball fans will enjoy a double-sided dartboard adapted to the national pastime. While the conventional side of the 1930s dartboard has seen heavy use, baseball side is in extraordinary condition.
The auction will begin Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
