Universal Live to auction outstanding selection of posters, June 10
NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Universal Live will offer a prized array of original antique and vintage posters in its Thursday, June 10 Fine Prints, Original Art & Sculpture auction, with Internet live bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com. The sale, which begins at 3 p.m. Central Time (4 p.m. Eastern), features more than 50 desirable posters. Most of the posters are European and from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. Countries of origin include Italy, France, Germany, England and the United States.
Universal Live’s marketing manager, Ed Hoover, commented on the “brightness and excellent condition” of lot 530197, a J.A. Vadal autootive poster; lot 535961, a Georget Air France poster; and lot 539668, a Lander British Railways Poster.
“Rarely do antique and vintage posters of this quality appear in the marketplace in such quantity,” Hoover said. “Most are linen backed which helps preserve the integrity of the poster. Also, although many of the posters are not signed, they are known to have been created by well-known artists. An example would be lot 535989, a 1976 vintage Coca-Cola with Santa poster, which we believe was done by Norman Rockwell.”
Universal Live’s auctioneer, Martin Shape, noted that the collection of posters was consigned by the Prestige Art and Frame Company. “This company has been in business for 45 years but now wants to concentrate on the framing aspect of their business and is liquidating all of their old art,” Shape said.
When framed, posters can cover a very large wall space, making them a cost-effective form of decorative art. Among Martin Shape’s recommendations are: lot 535926, Palmolive Shampoo poster 38 by 55 inches; lot 535930, Irene Henry (actress) poster, 34 by 48 inches; lot 539641, Cinzano poster 27 by 39 inches; and lot 539629, Genevieve Guitry poster 32 by 47 inches.
The auction also includes posters by other noted artists, including Chagall, Renoir, Picasso, Dali, Peter Max, Erte, and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, who has forged a successful second career as a painter.
