NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Universal Live will conduct a rare art poster auction Wednesday, June 16, beginning at 3 p.m. Central. More than 400 lots of art posters, museum exhibition posters and signed art comprise the sale. LiveAuctioneers will provide Internet live bidding.
More than 350 lots are from the estate collection of Rare Posters LTD, which has been a wholesaler/distributor for over 20 years. The company tailored one of the most comprehensive collections of fine art, museum and exhibitor posters in the art business, said Martin Shape of Universal Live.
The auction will feature pop art items and artists with names such as Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine, Miro, Lichtenstein, Koons, Calder, Rosenquist, Chisto, Rauschenberg, Vasarely, Hockney, Cocteau, Cutrone, Peter Max, Dali, Kostabi, Keith Harring, Wesselmann, Oldenburg, Burton Morris and many others.
“We need only to look at the Hockney art poster (lot 510001), Lichtenstein’s Girl with Ball poster (510010), Indiana 1967 Mother of Us All poster (lot 510044), Glaser San Diego Jazz Festival poster (510050), and the Jim Dine Pinocchio mixed media (lot 510244), and can easily identify it as pop art,” said Shape, speaking of the movement, which started in the early 1960s and was coined pop art late in the decade.
“There appears to be a revival of pop art which has been accepted by this generation, probably due to its affordability, and is quite distinguished from contemporary art exampled by the Helen Frankenthaler poster (lot 510400), Gunther Forg poster (lot 510150) and Vija Celmins poster (lot 510041). On a somewhat higher plane we have Brach, Calder, Leger, Kandinsky, Picasso, Dali and Chagall,” said Shape, adding, “Most of the pop art in the auction has opening bids of $50-$100.”
