Vintage neon signs beckon enthusiasts to Worldwide’s April 22-23 auction

AUBURN, Ind. – Worldwide Auctioneers will hold its annual Enthusiast Auction on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23. Collectors can choose among pre-war automobiles, muscle cars, sports and classics, as well as an exceptional selection of the best memorabilia to be found. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The event will also welcome aficionados back for the second annual Enthusiast Tour, a truly one-of-a-kind, three-day classic car tour tailored to the Midwest, which includes multiple invitation-only private collections and specialist automotive and dining stops in Indiana before rolling right back into Auburn for the Enthusiast Auction.

Vintage petroliana and automobilia on offer in the two-day sale includes a Mobilgas pegasus neon sign, estimated at $10-$100,000 (as are all the lots discussed in this story). The red porcelain sign, enlivened with red neon and taking the shape of the famous winged horse logo, measures 36 by 27in and could possibly be a reproduction.

Another prize sure to inspired frenzied bidding is an original circa 1930s-1950s Indian motorcycle sign from the Chicago dealership. The lot notes state it is in “excellent working order” and “It has been restored with new neon and all new electrics; it is big, bold and would be the ultimate wall decoration for a quality collection.”

Combining a popular soda brand with a road trip icon is a sign for Route 66 Market emblazoned with the Dr. Pepper logo and lit with blue, white and amber neon. The sign bears a July 1963 date.

Equally tempting is a circa-1950s set of seats recovered from a barber shop. Described as being in “very good condition,” the seating is upholstered in heavy-duty dark red vinyl and features chrome tubular framing with black arm rests.

The final highlight among the delights on offer is an undated Indianapolis 500 enamel on metal neon sign. It boasts the famous winged wheel logo crowned with seven flags and comes with its original box.
