YORK, Penn. – A remarkable trove of vintage Porsche promotional posters documenting its racing victories heads to market as part of Keystone Auction‘s Toys, Coins, Collectibles, Jewelry sale on Friday, January 5. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Lovingly assembled by a Porsche enthusiast, the collection of nearly 90 items documents Porsche’s dominance in the racing circuits from the 1950s to the 1980s. The company was founded in 1931 by Austro-Bohemian Ferdinand Porsche (1875-1951), who was also responsible for the design of the Volkswagen Beetle and many other innovations. Porsche favored the air-cooled, rear-engine format for his vehicles, and Porsche cars were something altogether different – and formidable – on the racing circuits.

As might be expected, the lots with the highest estimates are also the oldest posters in the collection. Many of the items were for the domestic West German market, and are in German. Issued in 1954, just three years after Porsche’s passing, this poster celebrates Porsche racing victories at the celebrated Nürburgring racetrack in West Germany and is signed by the artist. It carries a $1,000-$1,500 estimate.

The Mille Miglia (1000 mile) race in Italy was a legendary event, drawing millions of spectators along its thousand-mile route through northern Italy. Its final running was in 1957, and Porsche issued this English-language poster citing both class victories and new records over a map of Italy and the race route. It is estimated at $800-$1,500.

A 1960 poster by Porsche in-house artist Erich Strenger (1922-1993) titled Weltmeister (World Champion) celebrates Porsche Formula II victories of the season and has fantastic artwork. Strenger had been a Wehrmacht soldier during World War II and then was captured and imprisoned by the Soviets for four years. He joined Porsche in 1951 and stayed with the Stuttgart manufacturer until his retirement in 1987. The poster is estimated at $700-$1,200.

As time went on, illustration went out of favor and photography began to dominate Porsche promotional posters. This 1973 24 Hours of Daytona poster is typical of the 1970s and 1980s output. It is estimated at $400-$600.
