Vogt Galleries devotes June 20 sale to luxe fashion, jewelry

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Vogt Galleries will sell a curated collection featuring over 350 lots of fabulous estate jewelry, designer handbags, fine Swiss watches and a large selection of gold and diamond jewelry on Saturday, June 20. The items are from San Antonio collectors and estates throughout Texas. The auction will begin at noon Central time. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

“A woman’s handbag — and she may wear three in a day, depending on the occasion, her outfit and her mood — is an extension of her personality, of herself,” said Gabriel Echeverry, director of luxury estates for Vogt Galleries. “It can even be seen as an expression of art. She’s painting herself and the bag is part of that palette.”

“It’s the new thing,” said Rob Vogt, owner and director of operations at Vogt Galleries. “That and watches, which is for men the equivalent of ladies’ handbags. Christie’s and Sotheby’s got into these watch-only, purse-only, jewelry-only auctions, and those are becoming their highest grossing sales. We had a live estate sale last year that included some jewelry and handbags, and there was just a lot of excitement in the room. When a woman had the winning bid on a handbag, she stood up and cheered. I never thought people would know us for that — we’re about estate antiques, Texas art — but it seems that when we opened that door a crack, people came rushing in. As far as I know, this — an auction devoted just to luxury items like handbags — is a first for San Antonio.”

Highlights include a large selection of designer purses by Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Judith Leiber, Chanel, Gucci, Celine, scarves by Hermès, watches by Rolex and Panerai, jewelry by James Avery, Chanel, Tiffany, Cartier, Hermes and many more.

Among the items is a head-turning Judith Leiber crystal bear minaudière (below), estimated in value at $400-$700; Hermes Evelyne 1 Shoulder Bag GM in Rouge Courchevel calf leather with gold-tone hardware ($1,800-$2,200); and a Givenchy medium easy blue leather tote bag with rolled leather handles ($200-$400). Jewelry includes a Rolex Yacht-Master 40mm watch ($5,000-$7,000); an Art Deco period fan-shaped pin/pendant combo in platinum with four rectangular cut emeralds and 34 baguette cut diamonds ($6,000-$9,000); and a Roberto Coin Appassionata seven-row woven bracelet in 18K gold with 0.56cts. of round cut diamonds ($400-$700).

“It’s stuff people want to buy,” Echeverry said. “I’ve chosen items specifically for the San Antonio market because we’re a fun city, a festive city. We accessorize for Fiesta, and I wanted to reflect that. So, there are a lot of colorful bags and jewelry that are more nontraditional. I can say that there is truly something for everyone, for every age group and pocketbook.”
