NEW YORK – Doyle’s November 17 sale of Fine Photography features a major 19th century photographically illustrated work, Felice Beato’s Photographic Views of Japan with Historical and Descriptive Notes, which is very rarely found complete. Absentee and Internet live bidding for the sale will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Choice examples of 20th-century photography include a signed example on the original mount of Margaret Bourke-White’s great 1931 composition The George Washington Bridge, Hudson River, NYC, 1931, together with several other significant images by the photographer.

A major contemporary of hers, Walker Evans, is represented by several important images from his Depression-era series of images of rural Alabama, and also an extraordinary series of 46 images of Cuba taken during his 1933 trip there and given to the author Ernest Hemingway. The lot also includes a note from the author to the photographer that speaks of a loan of “ten or fifteen dollars” (which appears to have ultimately been twenty-five), an offer which Evans had apparently previously turned down but decided the following day to accept.

Fashion photography, an ever-popular category, is epitomized by works such as Irving Penn’s 1974 image Schiaparelli Jacket with tinsel and glass and also Helmut Newton’s Jassara, Rue Aubriot, Paris, 1977.

Works by Bill Brandt, Harry Callahan, Ray Metzker, and George Tice are featured. Two Brandts are in the sale, including a large-format print of one of the East Sussex Coast series, 1979, which displays Brandt’s affinity with the work of Henry Moore.

Contemporary works include three images by Cindy Sherman; several large images by Ahmet Ertug, among them Hagia Sophia, Istanbul; and three images from Chris Jordan’s series Intolerable Beauty: Portraits of American Mass Consumption.

There will also be an interesting series of lots of photobooks, many of which are inscribed.
