Wickliff Auctioneers draws on fine art, jewelry for June 28 sale

CARMEL, Ind. – Wickliff & Associates Auctioneers will conduct a Thursday Evening Art and Jewelry Auction on June 28 starting at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. The auction is composed of about 75 lots of fine art, including works by listed Indiana artists, about 130 lots of fine jewelry and watches, and about two dozen lots of gold and silver coins. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Featured attractions include a T.C. Steele oil on canvas landscape of scenic Brown County, Indiana, where the impressionist drew in other artists in 1907, establishing an art colony. The large painting (above), which shows prior relining and has a new stretcher, is likely in its original frame. It is expected to sell for $7,000-$10,000.

An oil on canvas landscape painting by Adolph Robert Schulz (below) is also featured in the auction. Born in Delavan, Wisconsin, Schulz studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase, and in Paris. He returned to Wisconsin many summers to paint. Around 1900, he began trips to Nashville, Indiana, and eventually moved there with his family in 1917. He is considered a key figure in the development of the Brown County artist colony.

A painting by Indiana artist Chas W. Mundy (b. 1945) is titled At the Beach, Beach Watch. The oil on board painting has exhibition and prize tags attached verso. This large work was purchased from the artist in 2006.

The brightest item in the jewelry category is a beautiful diamond ring that has a 3.01-carat emerald-cut center stone flanked by trapezoid diamonds and set in 18K gold.

More than a dozen wristwatches will go up for bid including a Carl F. Bucherer Patravi chronograph, which is like-new and has yet to be worn. This stunning watch retails at $10,900 but has an opening bid of $3,000.

Gold coins offered in the auction include a half dozen 1986 $25 American Gold Eagle coins as well as a 1901-S $5 Liberty Half Eagle, all sold in separate lots.
