Wiederseim marks mid-winter with major auction Feb. 11

CHESTER SPRINGS, Pa. – Wiederseim Associates Inc. will conduct their annual Mid-Winter Antique Auction on Saturday, Feb. 11, and will feature many wonderful items from the estate of John E. duPont, Foxcatcher Farm, Newtown Square, Pa., the estate of Cynthia A. Turner, Gwynedd, Pa., and other estates and collections from the Main Line Philadelphia, Chester Springs, Pa, as well as New England and elsewhere.

Among the many pieces of artwork to be sold are works by Edwin Megargee [American/New York, 1883-1958], English, Frank F. [American, Delaware/Pennsylvania, 1854-1922], Linford, Charles, [American, Pennsylvania, 1846-1897], Gruppe, Emile Albert [American/Massachusetts, 1896-1978], Wolff, Gustave [American-New York/Missouri, 1863-1935], Bonfield, William Van de Velde [American/Pennsylvania, 1834-1885] and Baker, Elisha Taylor [American, New York/Connecticut, 1827-1890], Ricciardi, Cesare A. [American/Pennsylvania, 1892-1973] and a very unusual piece by Seltzer, Olaf Carl [American/Montana, 1877-1957] which is a mailing envelope with a gouache of an American Indian on horseback and signed underneath “O.CIRCA Seltzer” and postmarked Jan. 10, 1945.

There are several nice works that although are unsigned have generated quite a bit of interest among them a fine pair of American miniature portraits on ivory, circa 1830, an oil on canvas river landscape painting, circa 1860, Hudson River School, possibly the Susquehanna River, Pa., with cows along the banks and fallen trees and mounted in its original gilt gesso frame and a Victorian oil on canvas painting of kittens, circa 1880.

A fine collection of early maps will be sold to include examples from Europe, and North America including one of New Jersey circa 1775 and several word maps, two by Homann Heirs, circa 1746, one depicting double hemispheres surrounded by four polar spheres and the other titled Americae Mappa Generalis (Western Hemisphere).

There are many lots of furniture to be sold. Highlights include a Philadelphia Chippendale cherry chest of drawers, circa 1780, a beautiful cherry candlestand, late 18th century, with a circular dish top, turned shaft and delicate Queen Anne legs, an unusual pine dry sink, circa 1830, with a scalloped backsplash, a small blanket chest attributed to John Beistel & William Spear, Ohio, dated 1856, with original red paint decoration and bottle turned legs, a French mahogany Louis XVI-style desk, circa 1900, with extensive fire gilt mounts and caryatid legs, a Philadelphia knuckle arm Windsor chair, circa 1800, a Delaware Chippendale cherry tall-case clock, circa 1780, a New England Sheraton dressing table with original paint decoration and stenciled backsplash, a Pennsylvania German paint decorated dower chest “Val Len Din Huber,” dated 1785, the center front decorated with tulips and an unusual folk art open shelf cabinet with carved stars, oak leaves, rosettes, lions, sphinxes, grapes and birds, signed “Built by E.O. Kelsey” and dated 1899, found in Newburyport, Mass. Also going will be a well-rounded selection of tea tables, candlestands, tavern tables, lowboys, chairs, stands and desks will also be sold.

The extensive and eclectic selection of other items, accessories and decorative objects encompasses a large amount of sterling, Georgian and coin silver including several flatware services, tea services, pitchers and other tableware, some by Georg Jensen and Tiffany & Co. and a wonderful set of seven pairs of English silver penguin form salt and pepper shakers. There are several lots of textiles to include quilts and coverlets and some marvelous needleworks to include a rare silk on linen sampler wrought by Caroline Sawyer, age 11, Henniker, N.H., with ABC’s, dated Aug. 24, 1815, with finely embroidered flowers, trees, and birds in the border and verse reading: “As thus my hand with artful aim/Confirms the useful needles fame/So may my actions every act/Be aimed alone to mend my heart./ The time draws near that I must go/And bid adieu to things below/And if these line you chance to see/When I am gone remember me” and a large Reading, Pa., wool needlework allegorical scene wrought by Mary Jane Grant, 1850, and mounted in its original mahogany frame and with family documentation from 1970.

Porcelain objects range from French, German and Austrian, Chinese and other Asian examples, many folk art items including a half-hull model of the ship Harry, late 19th century, with original paint decoration, an early carved wood barber pole, 19th circa, with old red, white and blue paint decoration, game boards, a maple and mahogany ogee mantel “political” clock by Atkins, Porter & Co., Bristol, Conn., with 30-hour works and rare reverse painted glass panel of Zachary Taylor, a round trade sign “Agency Tansill’s Punch 5¢ Cigar” with original paint decoration, and a magnificent pair of French porcelain vases converted to electric lamps, probably Sevres.

There is a nice selection of jewelry and accessories, gold pocket watches, several early books including two first editions by Charles Dickens, early stoneware including a New York 5-gallon harvest jug inscribed “A. Merrell” by D.W. Graves, Westmoreland, a metal and wood Civil War drum with a painted American eagle and “AVC,” possibly Alabama Volunteer Corps, and a leather sheathed Samurai sword with a shagreen and leather grip.

Again, Wiederseim’s will be selling items from the estate of John E. DuPont Mahogany among them a commemorative plaque for the yacht Au Revoir “Launched April 6, 1893 … ” with hammer and remains or the champagne bottle used to christen her and pencil note verso “DuPont Yacht Launch,” a folk art carved pine blue heron, late 19th circa, a large coin and currency collection that includes rare half-cent coins, large cent coins, currency, gold and platinum commemoratives, foreign coins and currency. Most impressive is a Tiffany & Co.18-karat gold presentation trophy inscribed “PRESENTED TO WILLIAM L. AUSTIN BY THE BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS IN RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION OF SIXTY CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AUGUST 7TH 1870-1930,” total weight 1331 troy ounces. Austin was president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, and John du Pont’s maternal grandfather.

The auction will be held on Saturday Feb. 11, at 9 a.m. Eastern at Griffith Hall, Ludwig’s Corner Firehouse, 1325 Route 100, Glenmoore, PA 19343, (37 miles west of Philadelphia). Preview times are Friday Feb. 10, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 11, from 7 a.m. to sale time.
