CHESTER SPRINGS, Pa. – Wiederseim Associates Inc. will conduct their annual and always entertaining Thanksgiving weekend auction on Saturday, Nov. 26, and will feature many fine items from the estate of John E. Du Pont, Foxcatcher Farm, Newtown Square, Pa., as well as fine jewelry from the estate of Margaret R. Nagy, Malvern, Pa., and items from other Main Line Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Chester Springs, Pa., as well as New England estates and collections.

Of the many paintings to be sold, a large selection of sporting art includes works by Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880-1953), Richard Stone Reeves (American, 1910-2005), Arthur Alfred Davis (UK, active 1877-1905), Michael Lyne (American/UK, 1912-1989), Edward Benjamin Herberte (UK, 1857-1893), Paul Desmond Brown (American/New York, 1893-1958), Gilbert Scott Wright (UK, 1880-1958), Henry Charles Woollett (UK, 1826-1893), Henry Murray (UK, floruit 1850-1860), Edwin Megargee (American/New York, 1883-1958) and Ernest Howard Shepard (British, 1879-1976).

There are several rare original watercolor paintings of birds by John R. Peirce (American/Pennsylvania, 1900-1970) and Peter Sculthorpe (Pennsylvania, b. 1948). Peirce graduated from the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art. Peirce also attended the School of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as the summer academy at Chester Springs. Sculthorpe is primarily known for his landscapes of the Chester County area.

Other paintings include an original Peter Sculthorpe (American, 1948- ) watercolor painting of a winter landscape scene with a covered bridge, titled “Knox Bridge 1978” (Valley Forge, Pa.), a large oil on canvas variation of Leda and the Swan by Franz Theodore Grosse (German, 1829-1891), Francis Moltino (Italy/UK, 1818-1874), several works by Susan Hayward Schneider (American/Pennsylvania, 1876-), several by Harvey Dean Sandström (American, b. 1925), and two watercolor portraits by Hubert Shuptrine (American, 1936-2006), including one of John E. Du Pont.

Among the many lithographs are several Currier & Ives, and a marvelous Audubon elephant folio Great White Heron, “Engraved, Printed & Colored by R. Havell 1835.”

A fine collection of 19th- and 20th- century bronzes includes pieces by Arson, Fratin, Laurent, Voelckering, Mêne, both Rosa and Isidore Bonheur, William Turner, and a wonderful 1858 large gilt decorated cast-iron relief bust of George Washington by Thomas Dow Jones (American/New York & Ohio, 1817-1891). For those who favor smaller versions, there is an extensive offering of cold painted bronze animal figures includes many wonderful 19th-century examples.

Among the many lots of furniture being sold, there will be a rare set of eight Philadelphia Federal mahogany side chairs, circa 1800, a fine English Chippendale mahogany cellaret in the form of a diminutive chest of drawers, a New England Hepplewhite cherry bow-front chest of drawers, circa 1790, a Georgian mahogany camelback sofa, circa 1780, a Boston Chippendale slant-front desk, circa 1780, an extraordinary Boston Queen Anne walnut highboy, circa 1760, with original brasses, an Empire mahogany cabinet in the manner of Joseph Barry, Philadelphia, a Chippendale mahogany side chair, circa 1780, with a carved splat of an unusual form, Chippendale two-part banquet table, circa 1780, and an exceptional New England Chippendale cherry serpentine chest of drawers, circa 1780. Also being offered is a Pennsylvania paint decorated two-piece corner cupboard, circa 1830, a well-rounded selection of tea tables, candlestands, tavern tables, lowboys, chairs, stands and desks will also be sold.

The extensive and eclectic selection of other items, accessories and decorative objects encompasses a large amount of sterling and coin silver including several flatware services, tea services, pitchers including a fine Tiffany example. There are items from Russia to include an unusual Russian cylindrical form ivory tea caddy, 19th century, the top with a silver Imperial double headed eagle, an ebony ambassador’s box, 19th century, with fire gilt mounts, and double-headed Imperial eagle, and many beautifully decorated lacquerware boxes.

Of the many china pieces and services with game and sporting art motifs by Spode, Minton, Limoges, Lenox and others, there is a set with scenes from paintings by J.F. Herring, as well as a set with individual landscapes of Foxcatcher Farm (formerly known as Licester Hall from 1925-1988) and titled verso Licester Hall and hand signed “Geo. W. Reinbold” by the artist George Wilmer Reinbold (American, 1885-1946). There are several Black Forest carved items including a marvelous log-form box with a bear handle, Civil War items, a large section of ceramic and porcelain foxes, all rounded out by a nice selection of fine jewelry and accessories and early maps and atlases.

The auction will be Saturday Nov. 26, beginning at 9 a.m. Eastern at Griffith Hall, Ludwig’s Corner Firehouse, 1325 Route 100, Glenmoore PA 19343, (37 miles west of Philadelphia). Preview times are Wednesday, Nov. 23, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Friday Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday Nov. 26, from 7 a.m. to sale time of 9 a.m. Eastern.
