William Merritt Chase painting headlines at Roland, Jan. 28-29
GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Roland Auctions NY will present two days of auctions with its Private Collector Sale on Friday, January 28 at 10 am Eastern time, featuring more than 300 antique through contemporary frames, along with fine art, furniture and rugs, all from the collection of a prominent Manhattan art dealer. In addition, Roland will host its Winter Wonderland Auction on Saturday, January 29 at 10 am Eastern time. It will feature fresh-to-market lots of fine art, furniture, antiques, decorative arts and collectibles gathered from multiple estates in the tri-state area. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Paintings offered on January 28 will include a William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916) oil on cradled panel titled Portrait, After Velasquez. It carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000. Also of note is V. Dahmm’s painting of a girl with a doll, a European oil on canvas that dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. Its estimate is $6,000-$9,000.
A leader among the antique frames being offered is a large ornately carved undated figural wooden frame, having carved heads. It is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.
Highlights of the Winter Wonderland Auction on January 29 will include Portrait of Lady by Godaert Kamper (Dutch, 1614-1679), a 17th-century oil on canvas in an oval giltwood frame. A letter from Professor Justus Muller Hofstede (German, 1929-2015), who was a professor at the Institute of Art History at the University of Bonn for most of his life and an expert in Flemish and Dutch painting of this period, includes his stated informed opinion that this portrait was by Kemper (a photograph of Professor Hoftede’s letter appears among the lot images). The work is estimated at $1,800-$2,200.
Antique furniture pieces being offered include a pair of Viennese Art Deco oval table vitrines. Primarily made from oak, they carry an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
Decorative items will be in abundance at the January 29 Roland Auctions sale. Of particular note is an A. Cain bronze sculpture depicting a lion and a slain bird of prey, bearing the foundry mark ‘Susse F[rer]es. Ed. Paris.’ It is estimated at $4,500-$6,500.
Equally worthy of mention is a French 19th-century porcelain tureen, decorated with Neoclassical motifs on its lid and body, and estimated at $1,000-$1,500.
The January 29 auction lineup includes jewelry, such as a Cartier 18K rose gold Love bracelet, Cartier 18K rose gold “Love” bracelet with its original box, and a Cartier-branded bag, estimated at $4,000-$6,000, as well as a Louis Vuitton trunk with a stenciled checkerboard design. It dates to the late 19th or early 20th century, and is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
