THOMASTON, Maine – A stellar inventory of fine and decorative arts will be offered at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Autumn Majestic Auction on November 12, 13 and 14. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

On Friday, November 12, the sale will feature the collection of noted advertising photographer Frank Cowan, including 16th and 17th century English oak furniture, medieval metalwork, and 231 lots of ceramics representing Chinese culture from the Neolithic period (pre-1500 BCE) through the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). On Saturday, November 13, the auction will present fine American and European paintings, American furniture and folk art, and on Sunday, November 14 the sale will offer 20th century decorative arts and jewelry.

Leading the sale is an oil on canvas painting by Winslow Homer, titled Coming Through the Rye. The painting depicts a contemplative young woman with downcast eyes standing in a grain field. Created during a 10-month period Homer spent painting in France, it is inscribed “Homer/Paris 1867”. This work is included in the artist’s catalog raisonne, and it has an impeccable provenance and exhibition history. It carries an estimate of $1 million-$1.5 million.

Also featured is an undated work by Kees van Dongen, depicting a girl with flower in her hair, estimated at $100,000-$150,000. Van Dongen was one of the most influential artists of his time; he adopted the Fauvist style of bright colors and bold brushwork in the early 20th century and bridged impressionist and expressionist styles.

An important Tiffany Studios bronze table lamp with a Dragonfly leaded glass shade will be presented with an estimate of $100,000-$150,000. Considered one of the most desirable of the Tiffany designs, the Dragonfly shade is composed of hundreds of meticulously arrayed glass pieces.

The sale will also offer a magnificent signed E.F. Caldwell & Co. ormolu and Rouge du Roi marble figural centerpiece, estimated at $15,000-$20,000, and a pair of French silver candelabra by Cartier. Other rarities will include a circa-1400 Northern European bronze tripod ewer and a large group of medieval candlesticks.

The extensive collection of Asian artifacts will feature an 18th-century Chinese flambe glazed moon flask with a Qianlong seal, estimated at $18,000-$20,000; a 16th-century Thai bronze Buddha altar figure, and a Chinese Yuan dynasty (1272-1368) Cizhou painted Dragon and Phoenix stoneware jar.

A 50-lot group of early English oak furniture will be offered, led by a late 16th-early 17th-century joined oak cupboard with intricate carved bust portraits and linenfold panels, estimated at $5,000-$10,000; an Elizabethan period three-tier joined court cupboard with bulbous cup and cover support columns; and a Charles II period leather upholstered walnut sleeping chair.

Featured among the American furniture collection will be a circa 1700 red painted Deerfield blanket chest, estimated at $3,000-$5,000; a pair of New York Chippendale period walnut side chairs; and a Pennsylvania Dutch painted six-plank dowry chest dated 1811.

Among the 44-lot estate jewelry and watch collection will be an antique platinum and diamond link chandelier necklace, estimated at $10,000-$15,000; a ladies 18K gold Rolex Datejust wristwatch set with diamonds; and a ladies 14K white gold, bluish-grey star sapphire and diamond ring.

There will be an interesting selection of finely painted Russian icons from the 17th through 19th centuries; art pottery, including pieces by George Ohr and John Bennett; and folk art, featuring a black painted eagle mount and a gilded copper fire pumper form weathervane. Rounding out the sale will be groups of marine antiques, oriental carpets, art glass and silver.
