CHICAGO – Wright’s auction of Post War & Contemporary Art on April 27 will be the inaugural sale for Erica Barrish, the Chicago auction house’s new senior specialist for Fine Art. Barrish, a former assistant vice president of Fine Art at Christie’s, has assembled a 225-lot sale that includes notable works from Kazimir Karpuszko’s collection and former gallery inventory.
LiveAuctioneers will provide Internet live bidding for the auction, which begins at noon Central.
Born in Poland in 1925, Karpuszko immigrated to the United States after serving with the British Army at the end of World War II. Studying at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, also known as the Chicago Bauhaus, Karpuszko received a master’s degree in art education and studied photography with Aaron Suskind and Harry Callahan. He became involved in the Structurist Art movement as a dealer, author and curator. He and his family moved to Minneapolis in 1973 where he continued to deal in art. Karpuszko, who collected mid-century Constructivist and Chicago Bauhaus works, died Aug. 29, 2009.
The sale will feature exceptional works from Karpuszko’s collection and select works from movements including Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Minimalism, Photorealism, Conceptualism and Graffiti.
Featuring select works of the 20th century, the sale includes a 1966 Guenther Uecker Zero Movement work estimated at $150,000-$200,000. Barrish noted that a similar work by the German artist sold at Sotheby’s for $1.3 million.
Other artists represented at the auction include Ilya Bolotowsky, Deborah Butterfield, Walter Dahn, Thomas Downing, Donald Judd, Louise Nevelson, Irene Rice Pereira, Luis Tomasello, Richard Tuttle, Andy Warhol and Lawrence Weiner.
