GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Roland Auctions NY kicked off the New Year in style. The company’s January 1 sale turned out to be its highest-grossing single-day, and highest-grossing per lot, auction of the past year. The auction lineup featured selections from multiple estates with a spotlight on the collection of a socialite from European nobility who had properties at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan and in Lloyd Harbor, Long Island. The collection offered everything from Louis XIV to mid-century Modern, along with art, silver, jewelry and decorative items.

The New Year’s Day auction featured many surprises and sleepers that sold well above their estimates, most notably a 19th-century Chinese famille rose Hu-form vase that sold for $54,000. Decorated in enamels, it displayed the ‘Hundred Deer motif, a continuous scene of deer frolicking in grassy meadows beside a river, all within a rocky, mountainous landscape with pine trees. Another work of Asian art that sold markedly well was a framed Tibetan thangka, which achieved $43,750.

Notable among the decorative arts offerings was a pair of Neoclassical-style urn-form gilt bronze wine coolers that quickly shot up to the selling price of $46,875. Both were decorated with swags and garlands, gadrooning and ram’s heads, their lids fluted with bone finials.

Antique furniture also did impressively well in the January 1 auction, led by a pair of circa-1765 George III carved mahogany games tables. The serpentine fold-over tables, possibly Scottish and reflecting the manner of Thomas Chippendale, realized $37,500.

Also doing well was a unique 18th-century Continental tortoiseshell veneered walnut cabinet, fitted with drawers surrounding a central door opening to three drawers. It achieved $5,625.

A final highlight came in the form of an oil on canvas depicting classical figures in a landscape. The work was unsigned and apparently not completed, but nonetheless sold for $16,250.
