Reading the Streets: Anna and Karl by Bradley Theodore

NEW YORK – In honor of Fashion Week, this glimpse inside the heads of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld was irresistible. According to artist Bradley Theodore, it’s a very colorful journey.
The Vogue editor in chief and Chanel designer are shown in profile, facing each other. A small red heart hangs in between them. Their faces look like brightly rendered skeletons, all dark, hollow eyes protruding bones and rickety teeth. Except these fashionistas would never limit themselves to black and white, and both Lagerfeld’s and Wintour’s inner faces are painted in bright shades of blue, pink, green, red and orange – a veritable rainbow under the skin.
Their hair too, remains prominent; Wintour’s bob is as perfectly placed as ever, brown where her face is multicolored. Lagerfeld’s white ponytail too, is detailed and perfectly fastened. No frizz for the head of Chanel.
I like to think that Theodore is not portraying either of the subjects as dead, but simply showing their inner, more colorful selves, which of course includes perfect hair. You can decide for yourself by visiting the mural, which is on Kenmare Street, off of Mott, decorating an exterior wall of L’Asso, a delicious pizzeria. Even the most carb-phobic would be happier for it.
The real question however, is whether either fashion luminary will ever pay a visit. Until then, you can see more of Theodore’s work on his Instagram page, www.instagram.com/bradleytheodore.
