BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After seeing Yok on a visit to 5 Pointz in Long Island City, Queens, I wanted to see more of the Australian artist’s droopy-eyed, big-headed characters. His spray painting has taken him all over Asia, particularly Thailand, where he volunteered in some of community schools.

Yok has done plenty to decorate his current locale—he moved to Brooklyn not too long ago. In a short time he’s become an integral part of the evolving street art scene, collaborating with artists such as Sheryo and Never on murals. Yok also creates detailed illustrations and ink drawings and canvases. His paintings have appeared in exhibitions around the world.

Much like stone gargoyles, Yok’s animated, often mustachioed faces perch on the side of the buildings, imbuing the neighborhood with whimsy and color. They are reminiscent of French artist Ema’s big blue raindrops, but with more individual personality. They incorporate everything from pirate imagery to aboriginal-inspired patterns. View more of Yok’s work and videos of him putting up his street art on his website, theyok.com.
