NEW YORK – Soon they’ll be distributed throughout Manhattan and in full view of the public, but ACN readers deserve a sneak preview of the imaginatively decorated vending boxes that are the latest in street art.
I was able to check out all 16 Showpaper newspaper boxes on display in Williamsburg at the Community Serviced Too show. Showpaper is a free publication that lists shows in the New York City/tri-state area. Each issue features a full-color illustration by a contemporary artist.
The elaborate boxes will be hard to miss on the streets—most incorporate bright colors and use three-dimensional objects. They all reflect the various artists’ styles and aesthetics.
Curator Andrew H. Shirley, who organized part one of the show as well, brought together the street artists, assigning two to each box. Pairs include Adam Void & Chris Stain, BAK & VIL, CELSO & SKEWVILLE, CLAW & JESSE, Dennis McNett, Doyle Huge & Mikey 907, GAIA & Heidi Tullmann, HELLBENT w/Alison & Garrison Buxton, Leon Reid IV & POSTERBOY, MINT & SERF, Poneros & SPAM, Sto & Kelie Bowman, SWOON & Noah Sparkes, UFO 907, and a SURE tribute by FAUST.
Next week, the boxes will be delivered to various street corners, full of Showpapers. Let’s hope the public respects the work. Last show, which took place in November, COST’s box disappeared from its corner three days after its drop-off, only to show up on eBay, garnering bids that ran as high as $4,000. Luckily, Shirley was able to recover the box.
