Pewabic pottery vase, $37,200, DuMouchelle’s

A 17-inch-tall flowing matte green glaze hand-thrown Thistle vase on a Pewabic white clay body sold for $37,200 at an auction held July 19-21 by DuMouchelle’s in Detroit, Mich. Also, an 11-inch-tall Pewabic luster pottery vase finished at $4,650; an unusual, 5-inch-tall Crater “Lava” glaze vase changed hands for $2,108; a 4-inch copper luster glaze vase with teal and lavender tones brought $2,356; and an 8½-inch diameter copper glaze bowl thrown by Buck Stratton made $2,232.

9.02-carat diamond ring, $193,600, Kodner Galleries

A GIA-certified 9.02-carat rectangular brilliant-cut diamond, platinum and 18K yellow gold engagement ring sold for $193,600 at an auction held May 1 by Kodner Galleries in Dania Beach, Fla. Also, a 36-carat diamond Riviere necklace made $84,700; an 82-carat multicolor, three-strand diamond necklace went for $58,800; and two pairs of Art Deco diamond and platinum earrings hammered for $45,980 and $24,200.

1871 John Stobart painting, $111,150, Thomaston Place

A maritime painting by John Stobart (Mass./Fla., b. 1929), depicting New Orleans harbor in 1871, sold for $111,150 at a Summer Auction held Aug. 23-25 by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston, Maine. Also, Jasper Cropsey’s (N.Y., 1823-1900) 1864 oil on canvas work depicting the famous Pennsylvania Starrucca Viaduct knocked down for $81,900; and a mixed media work by Henri Laurens (French, 1885-1954) titled Le Femme a la Guitare changed hands for $51,000.

Chinese famille rose vase, $22,500, Kaminski Auctions

A 19th century 11-inch-tall Chinese famille rose Deer vase sold for $22,500 at an auction held Aug. 17-18 by Kaminski Auctions in Beverly, Mass. Also, an abstract painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to $13,881; a 13th or 14th century Chinese Ming dynasty bronze Buddha figure knocked down for $12,500; a rug based on Fernand Leger’s (1881-1955) Three Women, for Palazzetti Rugs, went for $8,250; and an oil painting of a band playing by Mane-Katz (1894-1962) made $6,250.

Philip Roth’s typewriter, $22,750, Litchfield Auctions

An Olivetti Lettera 32 manual typewriter previously owned and used by author Philip Roth sold for $22,750 at an auction held July 20 by Litchfield Auctions in Litchfield, Conn. Also, two of Roth’s black IBM Selectric typewriters went for a combined $12,740; a vintage oil on canvas painting of Roth changed hands for $19,500; Roth’s antique American oak swivel chair brought $5,330; and a pair of Noguchi Akari BB-55DD bamboo floor lamps lit up the room for $5,330.

Buffalo Bill presentation 1864 rifle, $18,125, Holabird Western Americana

An 1864 J.M. Stevens & Co. presentation rifle engraved “from Buffalo Bill to Night-Hawk & Broncho Bill” sold for $18,125 at an auction of firearms from the private collection of J.M. Davis, held July 26-28 by Holabird Western Americana Collections at the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum in Claremore, Okla. Also, a pre-1845 S. Hawken rifle having a Kentucky half-stock of walnut with a full engraved lock that appeared original hit $15,000.

Texaco porcelain sign, $8,400, Milestone Auctions

A Texaco Marine Motor Oil double-sided porcelain sign measuring 21½ inches by 11 inches and stamped “MADE IN USA 4-50”, sold for $8,400 at an auction held July 27 by Milestone Auctions, at the firm’s new gallery in Willoughby, Ohio. Also, a Mettlach 3L #1941 stoneware beer stein painted with the Saxony Coat-of-Arms achieved $7,200; and an Exhibit Supply Co. “Novelty Merchantman” 10-cent digger machine with working miniature steam shovel made $4,200.

German suit of armor, $31,250, John Moran Auctioneers

A 16th century German cuirassier suit of armor sold for $31,250 at a Traditional Collector Auction held July 21 by John Moran Auctioneers in Monrovia, Calif. Also, a Continental rapier knocked down for $2,812; a Paradise Maroon porcelain service by Royal Crown Derby realized $5,937; a pair of Irish Regency mahogany and brass peat buckets went for $5,625; and a circa 1885 painting by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (French, 1824-1898), titled Young Woman, gaveled for $13,750.

Beatles signed drawing, $7,800, Potter & Potter Auctions

A Yellow Submarine production pencil drawing signed by all four members of the Beatles sold for $7,800 at a Pop Culture Auction held July 27 by Potter & Potter Auctions in Chicago. Also, a 1951 PSA VG 3 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card No. 253 was a hit for $5,040; a library of astronaut signed books and autographs from the 1960s-2010s soared to $5,040; and a 1968 Topps Mets Rookies Jerry Koosman and Nolan Ryan baseball card No. 177 made $3,120.

Elmer Crowell pintail drake, $265,500, Guyette & Deeter

An important pintail drake by Elmer Crowell (East Harwich, Mass.) sold for $265,500 at an annual summer decoy auction held July 23-24 by Guyette & Deeter Inc. (based in St. Michaels, Md.) in Portsmouth, N.H. Also, a pintail hen and drake from the Kankakee Marsh brought $82,600 and $153,400, respectively; a hollow carved swimming Canada goose by Nathan Cobb Jr. fetched $76,700; and a carved eagle banner by John Bellamy changed hands for $126,260.

Olympic gold medal, $68,750, RR Auction

The Olympic gold medal for aerial skiing champion Alexei Grishin from the Vancouver 2010 Games, with Canadian aboriginal art and an undulating form, sold for $68,750 in an online auction held July 15-18 by RR Auction in Boston. Also, an Olympic Torch from the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo made $50,000; a Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics set of gold, silver and bronze medals made $25,000; and a Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics silver winner’s medal hit $13,752.

William Edmonson sculpture, $240,000, Case Antiques

A limestone carving by William Edmonson (Tenn., 1874-1951), titled Miss Amy, an Uplifted Lady, sold for $240,000 at an auction held July 13 by Case Antiques in Knoxville, Tenn. Also, a diamond ring featuring a 7.32-carat oval diamond and two fancy intense yellow diamonds more than one carat each gaveled for $168,000; an Impressionist coastal landscape by Henry Moret (French, 1856-1913) climbed to $132,000; and a diminutive Edgefield, S.C., face jug made $40,800.

Seaworth Bitters bottle, $25,740; Glass Works Auctions

A Seaworth Bitters Co. (New Jersey) bottle, circa 1880-1890, aqua in color and almost identical in form to the Cape May Lighthouse in New Jersey, sold for $25,740 in an online auction ending July 22 by Glass Works Auctions, based in East Greenville, Pa. Also, a smaller version of the same bottle, amber in color, made $9,945; a Fish Bitters bottle, made in Pennsylvania circa 1866-1875, medium lime green, brought $32,760; and another Fish Bitters, yellowish lime green, rose to $12,870.

Pair of antique dolls, $212,500, Theriault’s

A mid-1700s wooden doll made in England and called Miss Timber (left) sold for $155,000 and a circa 1915 22-inch-tall French bisque doll in her original Red Cross nursing costume finished at $57,500 at a Marquis Doll Auction held July 22 by Theriault’s in Annapolis, Md. Also, a doll made by German firm Kammer and Reinhardt in 1910 from an original sculpture by Arthur Lewin-Funcke went for $75,000.

Mike Trout rookie card, $186,960, Goldin Auctions

A 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects Mike Trout signed rookie baseball card sold for $186,960 in an online auction ending Aug. 2 by Goldin Auctions, based in Runnemede, N.J. Also, a 1916-1917 Honus Wagner game-used Louisville Slugger Model 125 bat was a hit for $442,800; a 2013 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks Kris Bryant signed rookie baseball card brought $111,930; and a 1999 Pokemon first edition complete card set, featuring #4 Charizard, went for $107,010.

Frederic Remington oil, $981,750, Coeur d’Alene

An oil on canvas painting by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), titled Casuals on the Range (1909), 18 inches by 26 inches, sold for $981,750 at the Coeur d’Alene Western & American Art Auction held July 27 in Reno, Nev. Also, an oil on canvas by Victor Higgins (1884-1949), titled Taos in Winter, 24 inches by 30 inches, reached $833,000; and an oil on canvas by Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), titled Crow Encampment, Montana, 30 inches by 36 inches, made $892,500.

1936 Roosevelt poster, $7,250, Swann Galleries

William Sanger’s 1936 political poster for Roosevelt and Lehman (“Vote American Labor Party”) sold for $7,250 at a vintage posters auction held Aug. 7 by Swann Galleries in New York City. Also, a set of four decorative panels on silk from 1900 by Alphonse Mucha, titled The Seasons, realized $14,300; Ludwig Hohlwein’s Mercedes / Daimler – Motoren – Geselleschaft (1914) brought $10,0000; and a 1970 Porsche poster featuring Steve McQueen went for $7,000.

Copy of ‘Captain America #1,’ $915,000, Heritage Auctions

One of the finest known copies of the comic book Captain America #1 (Timely, 1941), graded CGC NM 9.4, sold for $915,000 at a Comics & Comic Art Auction held Aug. 1-3 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. Also, Frank Frazetta’s original cover art painting for Creepy #17 (Warren, 1967) soared to $264,000; a copy of Batman #1 (DC, 1940), graded CGC VG/FN 5.0, realized $204,000; and Carl Banks’ original painting for Rug Riders’ Last Flight (1975) brought $156,000.

Edgar S. Paxson painting, $76,700, March in Montana

An oil on canvas painting by Edgar S. Paxson (1852-1919), titled Two Scouts Watching Custer’s Command (1916), sold for $76,700 at the 32nd annual March in Montana auction held March 22-23 in Great Falls, Mont. Also, an oil on canvas by Olaf C. Seltzer (1877-1957), titled Trail of the Diamond R, Great Divide, Montana (1936), went for $46,750; an oil on canvas by Tucker Smith (b. 1940), titled Silver Tip, made $41,300; and Ross Stefan’s The Listeners rose to $38,350.
