Grahame Sydney painting, $64,350, Thomaston Place

An oil on linen painting by New Zealand contemporary artist Grahame Sydney (b. 1948), titled Cook House, Home Hills, sold for $64,350 held Feb. 28-29 and March 1 by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston, Maine. Also, a rare 35-star flag from the 1864 Lincoln and Johnson presidential campaign brought $38,025; a Cartier Ming Tree platinum brooch finished at $18,720; and a collection of Civil War-related ephemera went for $36,708.

Robert Daughters oils, $35,670, Neue Auctions

Two oil on canvas paintings by New Mexico artist Robert Daughters sold for a combined $35,670 in an online Fine Art Auction held Feb. 22 by Neue Auctions in Beachwood, Ohio. Taos Homestead (shown) brought $19,680, while Ranchos Chapel, Taos fetched $15,990. Also, an oil on canvas by John Nieto (Texas/New Mexico, 1936-2018) titled Deer Dancer, knocked down for $10,455; and an acrylic on canvas by Nieto titled Lunar Duet (Wolfs) went for $5,412.

Maqbool Hussain painting, $16,250, Bruneau & Co.

A watercolor on paper by Maqbool Hussain (Indian, 1915-2011), titled Raging Horse, sold for $16,250 at an Estates Fine Art & Antiques auction held March 14 by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers in Cranston, R.I. Also, a figural oil on canvas painting by B. Prabha (Indian, 1933-2001), titled Woman with a Pear Basket, finished at $11,875; an Impressionist harbor etching by James Whistler garnered $8,750; and a 19th century English School bull and cow rendering hit $6,875.

Mickey Mouse tin windup, $64,575, Morphy Auctions

A lithographed tin windup five-finger Mickey Mouse toy made in Germany for the English market, 9 inches tall, dancing to and fro when activated, sold for $64,575 at a sale of toys, banks and automata held March 10-11 by Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pa. Also, a Jean Roullet (French) Snake Charmer musical automaton depicting an exotic dancer with a serpent made $55,350; and a rare Japanese tinplate windup Might Robot with the original box brought $41,025.

Tiffany ‘Lotus’ lamp, $150,000, Clarke Auction

A Tiffany Studios “Lotus” table lamp, signed, 26¼ inches tall, sold for $150,000 at an auction held March 22 by Clarke Auction Gallery in Larchmont, N.Y. Also, a vivid Tiffany “Peony” table lamp with a 10-inch shade lit up the room for $125,000; a 1959 white Cadillac series 62 Deville convertible sped off for $57,500; a rare Rene Lalique signed Grande Nue Bras Leves figure, 24½ inches tall, hit $31,250; and a pair of Gio Pontil sculptural chests hammered for $22,500.               Disneyland loading sign, $19,200, Potter & Potter

An enormous Disneyland Rocket Roads loading sign imploring riders, “Once On Board, Please Fasten Seatbelt,” sold for $19,200 at a Disney Auction held Feb. 8 by Potter & Potter Auctions in Chicago. Also, an Enchanted Tiki Room poster, created by Paul Hartley for the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, went for $15,600; a carved solid wood Walt Disney “World Splash Mountain” exit sign brought $10,800; and a Tom Sawyer Island cast outfit changed hands for $5,760.

Judy Garland arrangements, $30,599, Nate D. Sanders

Hundreds of orchestral arrangements owned by the late singer Judy Garland, including classics such as Over the Rainbow, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Judy at the Palace and I’m Always Chasing Rainbows, sold for $30,599 at an auction held Feb. 27 by Nate D. Sanders Auctions in Los Angeles. The arrangements were primarily used by Garland for The Judy Garland Show (1963-1964) and were contained in a large black trunk stamped with her name.

12 Lucien Rollin chairs, $10,938, Kamelot Auctions

A set of 12 Lucien Rollin dining chairs sold for $10,938 at a Modern Design Sale held Feb. 22 by Kamelot Auctions in Philadelphia. Also, a lovely Art Deco armoire finished at $10,400; a pair of Italian midcentury modern lounge chairs brought $9,100; a Roche Bobois sectional sofa garnered $7,500; a pair of parchment covered cube-form club chairs in the manner of Jean-Michel Frank achieved $5,000; and a large abstract sculpture by James Knowles knocked down for $4,160.

Rosseau dog art, $31,250, Doyle

A painting by Percival Leonard Rosseau (American, 1859-1937), titled Setters on the Scent (1910) sold for $31,250 at a Dogs in Art and Sporting Art auction held Feb. 12 by Doyle in New York City. Born in Louisiana, Rosseau went to Paris to study art at the Academie Julian. A painting of his wife with two Irish wolfhounds exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1904 was so well received by critics he began specializing in dog paintings. He joined the art colony at Old Lyme, Conn., in 1915.

Carl Morris painting, $18,000, Michaan’s

An oil on canvas painting by Carl Morris (American, 1911-1993), titled Forms in Landscape, sold for $18,000 at a Gallery Auction held March 7 by Michaan’s in Alameda, Calif. Also, a Chinese yellow ground Taoist priest dragon robe went to a determined bidder for $9,000; and a color aquatint by A.R. Penck (German, 1939-2017), titled From Childish to Pubescent, fetched $6,600. Penck’s real name was Ralf Winkler. He was a painter, printmaker, sculptor and drummer.

Carved jadeite figure, $13,750, John Moran

A Pre-Columbian Olmec-style carved jadeite figure sold for $13,750 at a Timeless Taxco auction held March 1 by John Moran Auctioneers in Monrovia, Calif. Also, an Antonio Pineda “Nautilus” silver flatware service garnered $12,500; a set of Matl silver and turquoise fish jewelry knocked down for $9,375; a Matl silver and coral necklace slipped around a new neck for $8,750; and a pair of William Spratling ebony and sterling silver salad servers changed hands for $6,250.

Apple-1 computer, $458,711, RR Auction

A fully functional Apple-1 computer, conceived by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as a bare circuit board to be sold as a kit and completed by electronics hobbyists, sold for $458,711 in an online auction that began March 5 and ended March 12 by RR Auction, based in Boston, Mass. Also, Jobs’ signed contract for the design of the Apple II realized $46,278; a Jobs signed internal bonus memo from 1983 made $15,307; and Jobs’ signed Macintosh PowerBook 190cs brought $12,671.

1912 Cadillac Model 30, $22,230, Jeffrey S. Evans

A 1912 Cadillac Model 30 touring car sped off for $22,230 at a Winter Americana Auction held Feb. 28-29 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mount Crawford, Va. Also, a California pictorial fire grenade changed hands for $16,380; a Willington Cathedral/Gothic pickle jar commanded $16,380; historic California leaded and stained-glass windows found a new owner for $16,360; and a Lacour’s Western figural bitters bottle went to a determined bidder for $15,210.

Edouard Cortes painting, $36,900, Leland Little

An oil painting by Edouard Cortes (French, 1884-1969), titled Place Saint-Michel, Paris, sold for $36,900 at an auction held March 14-15 by Leland Little Auctions in Hillsborough, N.C. Also, a screenprint by Andy Warhol titled Jimmy Carter II, a stylized rendering of the former U.S. president, gaveled for $15,375; Linden Frederick’s Orion brought $21,525; a North Carolina sulfur inlaid walnut tall-case clock made $29,520; and a platinum and 18K gold diamond solitaire ring hit $15,990.

1854-S half eagle $5 gold coin, $1.92 million, Stack’s Bowers

An 1854-S half-eagle, the first $5 gold coin struck at the San Francisco mint and often called “the King Of American Coins,” sold for $1.92 million at auctions held March 18-20 and 23-25 by Stack’s Bower’s in Santa Ana, Calif. Also, a 1796 American half cent coin finished at $336,000; an 1841 quarter eagle $2.50 gold coin known as “the Little Princess” hit $408,000; an 1854-S quarter eagle realized $384,000; and two 1907 double eagle $20 gold coins hit $222,000 and $456,000.

1933 Invisible Man poster, $182,400, Heritage Auctions

A rare movie poster for the 1933 classic film The Invisible Man sold for $182,400 at an auction held March 21 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas. The sale coincided with the 2020 remake, starring Elisabeth Moss, which became among Hollywood’s first films to go the route of video-on-demand. H.G. Welles’s concept for a crazed scientist turned invisible is holding well with today’s viewers. The poster for the famous Universal monster movie is one of only a few known to exist.

18K Rolex Yacht Master, $8,750, Crescent City

An 18K rose gold and stainless-steel Rolex Yacht Master wristwatch sold for $8,750 at an Important Estates Auction held March 21-22 by Crescent City Auction Gallery in New Orleans, La. Also, a group of three statues by the artist Erte sold as one lot for $6,625; a large 19th century leaded stained-glass panel from Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans earned $5,625; and a French Louis XVI-style ormolu-mounted carved cherry marble-top sideboard went for $2,250.

Louis Vuitton trunk, $4,000, Hindman

A late 19th century Louis Vuitton steamer trunk in Damier canvas, bound in wood slats and black painted metal hardware, sold for $4,000 at a Spring Fashion & Accessories Auction held March 19 by Hindman in Chicago. Also, a Chanel denim shoulder bag with embroidery and applique realized $2,000; an Hermes brown leather bag climbed to $1,375; a Chanel faux pearl and black bead necklace with flowers fetched $1,188; and a Chanel black velvet skirt changed hands for $1,125.
