ATLANTA – At the start of each month, ACN columnist Ken Hall gathers top auction highlights from around the United States and beyond. Here’s what made headlines since last month’s Gallery Report (prices include the buyer’s premium unless stated otherwise):

Horner grandfather clock, $90,750, Kennedy Auction

An R.J. Horner mahogany grandfather clock with J.J. Elliott nine-tube works, heavily carved and 118½ inches tall, sold for $90,750 at a sale of the Carl Smith estate of Memphis held June 2 by Kennedy Auction Service in Selmer, Tenn. Also, an R.J. Horner figural maiden carved mahogany china cabinet, circa 1890, brought $42,650; a Moravian pottery flask in the form of a woman, circa 1811, rose to $28,600; and a Tiffany Studios Tulip lamp shade with 16-inch diameter hit $24,860.

Pair of Russian icons, $9,300, Crescent City Auction Gallery

Two Russian icons made in Moscow circa 1908-1917, one titled Saint Nicholas (shown) and the other the Virgin of Vladimir, sold for $5,100 and $4,200, respectively, for a total of $9,300, at an Estates Auction held July 21-22 by Crescent City Auction Gallery in New Orleans. Also, a palace-size, Turkish Ousjak carpet, 13 by 16 feet, sold for $6,765; a 14K white gold link necklace realized $5,535; and a painting by Clarence Millet titled Moss-Laden Oak Trees hit $3,690.

Navajo child’s blanket, $93,750, John Moran

A Navajo classic period child’s wearing blanket, mid-19th century, with cochineal and indigo dyes, sold for $93,750 at a biannual Art of the American West and Turn of the Century Design auctions held June 19 by John Moran Auctioneers in Monrovia, Calif. Also, a late 19th- or early 20th-century Winchester “Double W” ammunition advertising board fetched $25,000; and a pair of Shop of the Crafters mission Morris chairs, manufactured circa 1910, hammered for $8,750. 

Frankenthaler painting, $598,000, Freeman’s

A painting by Helen Frankenthaler (American, 1928-20110) , titled Cinquecento, sold for $598,000 at a sale of Works from the Bachman Collection held June 4 by Freeman’s in Philadelphia. Also, a painting by Hans Hofmann (American/German, 1880-1966), titled Cataclysm (Homage to Howard Putzel), gaveled for $322,000; a sculpture by Willem de Kooning (American/Dutch, 1904-1997), titled Head #3, brought $286,000; and Fernando Botero’s sculpture Dog hit $200,000.

Krishen Khanna painting, $76,200, Material Culture

An oil painting by Krishen Khanna (Indian, b. 1925), titled The Humiliation of Draupadi, 70 inches by 48 inches, sold for $76,200 at an East Meets West Auction held June 11 by Material Culture in Philadelphia. Also, an intricately carved antique Chinese enamel teacup and saucer knocked down for $10,795; an oil and spackle painting by Manmohan Samant (Indian, 1924-2004), titled Black Moon, fetched $21,590; and a Kongo “N’kisi” magic fetish sculpture made $19,050.

Royal Copenhagen china, $28,125, Oakridge Auction

A 12-place setting of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica china sold for $28,125 at an auction held June 2 by Oakridge Auction Gallery in Ashburn, Va. Also, an oil on canvas painting by Maximilen Luce (French, 1858-1941) breezed to $22,800; a carved wood Zodiac clock made by the Gazo Clock Co. chimed on time for $4,800; a pair of 7.2-carat diamond cluster earrings gaveled for $10,625; and a World War II Japanese pilot’s watch by Seikosha brought $22,500.

Albert Bierstadt attribution, $131,250, Jackson’s Auction

A landscape oil painting attributed to Albert Bierstadt sold for $131,250 at an auction held April 24-25 by Jackson’s International Auctioneers in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Also, a Hopi Native American polychrome jar changed hands for $37,500; a Russian icon went to a buyer in Moscow for $31,250; a circa 1900 Hopi kachina doll depicting a Shalako Mana, 13 inches tall, realized $22,500; and a late Marvin Cone modernist-style painting sold for $27,500.

Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig signed baseball, $42,962, Goldin Auctions

A 1927 Official American Leage Ban Johnson baseball signed by New York Yankee sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig sold for $42,962 in an online auction held June 23 by Goldin Auctions, based in Runnemede, N.J. Also, a nearly complete set (93 of 96) of 1959 Fleer Three Stooges cards, PSA graded, went for $9,206; a 1977 Tom Seaver game-used and signed Rawlings baseball glove, PSA/DNA & Beckett, made $6,751; and a bat used in 2015 by Mike Trout to hit two home runs made $5,830.

Antislavery flag banner,$46,800, Jeffrey S. Evans

A rare and historically important antislavery flag banner sold for $46,800 at an Americana & Fine Antiques Auction held June 22-23 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mt. Crawford, Va. Also, a diminutive Stirewalt family paint-decorated box changed hands for $38,025; a Haida carved and painted cedar totem pole knocked down for $19,890; a Joseph Ives wall clock chimed on time for $17,550; and a Piedmont, N.C., paint-decorated jelly cupboard rose to $10,530.

Wild West Show photo, $15,600, Cowan’s Auctions

An albumen photograph of Western legends “Wild Bill” Hickok, “Buffalo Bill” Cody and “Texas Jack” Omohundro, from Cody’s personal collection and documenting the birth of the Wild West show, sold for $15,600 at a Summer American History Premier Auction held June 22 by Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also, an archive pertaining to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln from the collection of theater actor William J. Ferguson (1845-1930) realized $14,400.

Pair of Chinese Wucai bowls, $39,000, Michaan’s Auctions

A pair of Chinese Wucai Dragon and Phoenix bowls sold for $39,000 at a Gallery Auction held July 7 by Michaan’s Auctions in Alameda, Calif. Also, a bronze sculpture with green patina by Angel Botello (Puerto Rican, 1913-1986), titled Jane, gaveled for $15,600; a Mexican amethyst, silver and jewelry suite by Fred Davis changed hands for $2,280; and an F. Nicoud & Co. minute repeater, chronograph gold pocket watch and chain knocked down for $3,300.

Frank Frazetta comic art, $112,536, Hake’s Americana

Original comic book cover artwork by Frank Frazetta (American, 1928-2010) for Issue #2 of Blazing Combat (Jan. 1966) sold for $112,536 in an auction held July 10-12 by Hake’s Americana in York, Pa. Also, Frazetta’s cover art for Issue #4 of Blazing Combat (July 1966) realized $101,386; a copy of Detective Comics #38 (April 1940), graded CGC 5.5, with the first appearance of Robin the Boy Wonder, hit $58,410; and a copy of Detective Comics #36 (1940) was bid to $28,997.

Italian marble skull, $29,000, Kaminski Auctions

An early 19th-century Italian marble sculpture of a carved skull, 22½ inches tall, sold for $29,000 at an auction held July 14-15 by Kaminski Auctions in Beverly, Mass. Also, a pair of circa 1950 platinum, diamond and cabochon ruby earrings with an estimated 32 grams troy weight gaveled for $8,000; a vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust calendar wristwatch in original condition realized $6,000; and a pair of 18th-century Chippendale mahogany side tables made $4,000. Prices are hammer, exclusive of the buyer’s premium.

Bob Dylan signed letter, $29,645, RR Auction

A letter handwritten by singer-musician Bob Dylan to Debbie Green Andersen, an old Greenwich Village friend, postmarked July 26, 1975, sold for $29,645 in an online auction that ran from July 12-19 by RR Auction, based in Boston. Also, a first pressing of the record Please Please Me by the Beatles, fully signed at Fairfield Halls in 1963, went for $30,671; a Led Zeppelin fully signed Led Zeppelin II album brought $27,621; and a Jim Morrison signed photo made $26,348.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, $204,000, Heritage Auctions

A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle baseball card graded NM+ 7.5 sold for $204,000 at a Sports Trading Cards Auction held July 19-20 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. Also, an unopened 5-cent wax pack from that same issue, graded PSA NM 7, commanded $48,000; a 1915 Boston Red Sox real photo postcard, picturing Babe Ruth, made $108,000; Muhammad Ali’s 1960 Hemmets Journal rookie card fetched $90,000; and a 1968 Topps Mickey Mantle card hit $43,200.

Shogo Pilot-Namiki pen, $24,000, PBA Galleries

A Pilot-Namiki red lacquer maki-e pen by Shogo, circa 1925, sold for $24,000 at a Fine Writing Instruments Auction held July 19 by PBA Galleries in San Francisco. Also, a Montblanc Leonardo da Vinci 18K gold skeleton fountain pen reached $48,000; a Montegrappa White Knights 18K gold fountain pen brought $6,600; a Dunhill-Namiki Goldfish maki-e pen, Yukari-sized, 1930s, rose to $6,600; and a Montblanc Ghengis Khan 18K gold fountain pen went for $45,000.

Chinese ‘Beloved Unicorn’ coin, $32,535, Holabird Western Americana

A 5-ounce Chinese ‘Beloved Unicorn’ gold coin sold for $32,535 at a June Treasures from Pacific Shores auction held June 22-26 by Holabird Western Americana Collections in Reno, Nev. Also, the Con-Virginia, Dayton Condsolidation ore specimen collection from Nevada’s mining past realized $15,625; a Chinese silver Liang (Tael) coin, minted in 1908, rose to $8,438; and a Green Mountain Mining (Ontonagon County, Mich.) stock certificate from 1982 made $2,250.

French 18th-century corkscrew, $17,000, CollectorCorkscrews.com

An 18th-century French sheathed corkscrew dating to the Louis XVI period sold for $17,000 in an international online auction held in April by CollectorCorkscrews.com. Also, an 18th-century French sheathed fish handle corkscrew finished at $4,300; an 18th-century silver combination corkscrew and nutmeg grater changed hands for $4,600; and an American-made 20th-century corkscrew incorporating the Walker “bell” and made by Walker Mfg. (Erie, Pa.) made $480.
