CHICAGO – Hindman’s December 13 Important Jewelry auction turned in a stellar performance. Overall, the sale realized more than $3.37 million.

An antique Russian gold and diamond necessaire realized $275,000 against an $8,000-$12,000 estimate. The necessaire has a maker’s mark of A.W. Holmstrom, attributed to the Faberge workshop. It measures 3 by 2 ¼in and contains a sewing kit. It was consigned from the prominent Midwest collection of the Pamela K. Hull Trust of Chicago, and it was the standout of the sale. The Hull estate had a 100 percent sell-through rate.

“We are thrilled with our success in selling the Hull estate, made even sweeter by the high result achieved for this antique Russian golden egg,” said Director & Senior Specialist of Jewelry & Watches Sally Klarr. “It is rare to have a piece from the last Tsar’s era, potentially made in the famed Faberge workshop. While documentation is scarce for Faberge items, it’s safe to say the buyer agreed with our attribution.”

A heart-shape 8.14-carat diamond ring, which realized $337,500 against a $125,000-$175,000 estimate, was the top lot of the auction. Additional top-performing diamond rings included two featuring emerald cut diamonds, one weighing 8.12 carats and the other weighing 6.41 carats. The 8.12-carat diamond ring, offered as lot 77, realized $118,750, nearly doubling its high estimate. The 6.41-carat diamond ring, which appeared as lot 101, sold for a strong price of $81,250. A round cut 3.48-carat diamond was another highlight that realized $87,500.

Colored gemstones were also highly sought-after in the December 13 auction. Significant examples included an impressive 25-carat unheated Ceylon sapphire and diamond ring that earned $75,000 against a $20,000-$40,000 estimate. Also, an alexandrite and diamond ring sold for $22,500. “Weighing approximately four carats, this gem has an excellent green to red color change,” said Senior Specialist of Jewelry & Watches Ruth Thuston.

Highlights also included a collection of colored diamonds plus one white diamond, which realized $37,500, a sum well above its $4,000-$6,000 estimate.
