BEACHWOOD, Ohio – Neue Auctions’ English & Chinese Export Art & Antiques online-only auction, scheduled for Saturday, March 26, begins at 10 am Eastern time. Nearly 300 lots will be offered. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The battle for top lot honors could come down to a contest between a vase and a pair of bronzes. The circa-1900 baluster form vase by Paul Francois Berthoud (French, 1870-1939), titled Femme Libellule, is cast with the face of a woman with flowing hair supported by dragonfly wings and feathers, and the base is cast with Queen Anne’s Lace flowers. It carries an estimate of $12,000-$15,000.

The bronzes are by William MacMonnies (American, 1863-1937) and each has an estimate of $10,000-$12,000. One, titled Diana, is 31in tall and is signed and dated 1890. The other, titled Pioneer Mother, stands 15in tall and was designed and cast in monumental form for the Pioneer Monument in Denver, Colorado, which was erected in 1911. Both carry the foundry mark for Jaboeuf & Rouard in Paris.

As the auction’s title suggests, China Trade, Chinese Export and Chinese School lots will be plentiful. They include a 19th-century oil-on-canvas China Trade painting titled The Bund at Shanghai, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, and a 19th-century Chinese School oil painting titled American Clipper Ship Mary Entering Hong Kong, estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Another standout is an early 19th-century Chinese Export lacquer child’s sewing stand, the shaped hinged top decorated with chinoiserie in gilding on brown or black lacquer. It is monogrammed ‘Mary,’ and the top opens to a fitted interior. Its estimate is $1,500-$3,000.

The English offerings will be just as abundant. Expected star lots include a circa-1785 set of four Georgian mahogany hall chairs, purportedly for the Third Baron Boston of England. The foursome is estimated at $2,500-$4,500.

Certain to turn heads is an English Victorian table-top letterbox by Halstaff & Hannaford of London. It has an octagonal pillar form and is set with domed glass enclosing an enamel dial compass, with an enameled letter flap over a hinged locking door with a brass framed glass receptacle that displays postage rates. It is estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Equally of interest is a 19th-century English Regency or Victorian oak jockey scale, incorporating a leather upholstered seat with a tufted back over upholstered arms, with nail head trim. The scale is labeled ‘To Weigh 24 Stone.’ Its estimate is $2,000-$4,000.

A painting by the late 19th-century British artist H. D. Williams, titled The Magnet Coach, should realize $2,000-$4,000, while a 19th-century oil on canvas laid on panel American School house portrait by an unknown artist has an estimate of $200-$400.
