NEW YORK — Archimede Seguso (1909-1999) was a renowned Italian glassmaker from Murano, known for exquisite and intricate glass vases, necklaces, and sculptures. He was a key figure in the revival of traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques, particularly filigrana, which produced lattice-like patterns.

Seguso began his career in the family business, Seguso Vetri d’Arte, which dates to the 14th century. He took over the company in the late 1930s and later founded his own glassmaking company, Vetreria Artistica Archimede Seguso, in 1946. He collaborated with other designers such as Vittorio Zecchin and Flavio Poli.

On Sunday, August 25, in its New York City Estate Auction, Auctions at Showplace has a pair of Seguso Murano glass sconces from a New York City private collection. Measuring 12 by 8 by 5.5in, the sconces feature Aventurine gold leaf inclusions. The pair is estimated at $1,500-$2,500.

COPAKE, NY — The Saturday, August 24 Estate Auction at Copake Auctions includes, as a single lot, a large number of Britains hollowcast lead figures of horses and jockeys form part of the Colours of Famous Owners series that was issued by the UK factory from 1925 to 1960.

In total, there are more than 250 different ‘colours’ to collect, including those denoting racehorse owners such as Winston Churchill, Lord Astor, Lord Derby, and King George V. Sixty-three of these were advertised at various times in the annually produced Britains trade catalogs. The harder-to-find models were commissioned by owners and trainers who requested figures made featuring the patterns and colors of their own silks.

This selection numbers 33 pairs of pieces, none of them boxed, which come from the estate of Edward Herrmann, an actor and narrator best known for his role on The Gilmore Girls. The estimate is $1,000-$2,000.

ATLANTA — Though you wouldn’t know it to look at him, Ivan Bailey (1945-2013) was a giant in the world of iron sculpture. Many of his works adorn public parks and buildings in his adopted home of Atlanta. Born as a sickly child, he spent the first six months of his life in hospitals, saved — as his mother would believe — by prayer. Bailey was raised under the assumption he would devote his life to God, and he did enter a monastery after high school graduation.

“My mother offered my life to God if I lived,” he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2000. He paused and added, “Fortunately, these monks encouraged art.”

He earned various fine arts degrees and studied blacksmithing in Achen, West Germany. His travels ultimately landed him in the Atlanta area, where he forged a successful career creating works of art from iron.

Bailey’s aquatic sculptural console table is a featured lot at Atlanta Auction Gallery on Saturday, August 24 as part of its Fortune Favors the Bidder sale. The table is made from hand-wrought steel and glass. The structure features fish immersed in ocean flora, and one of the fish’s tails is signed and dated I.B. – A.T.L – 95. The piece is estimated at $2,500-$5,000.
