NEW YORK – La Belle Epoque Auction House will hold its Grand Reopening Multi-Estates Auction on Saturday, March 18 at 11 am Eastern time. Its first auction of 2023 will offer an impressive collection of fine art, antiques, silver, Mid-century Modern furniture, jewelry, fashion, lighting, memorabilia, collectibles and decorative items. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Providing a strong start to the March 18 auction is an early 18th-century French Regence period fruit wood commode with a thick-molded marble top. It once was part of the collection of Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan, the former Duchess of Marlborough, and also Matthew Shutz in New York City. The piece carries an estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

Another antique furniture standout is an Italian 19th-century Savonarola open armchair. The Renaissance revival-style furnishing sports carved walnut, an over-upholstered leather seat and back rest and ramshead arm supports. Its estimate is $300-$500.

Modern furniture pieces will include a late 20th-century Maitland Smith leather chest of drawers in a faux luggage chest design with metal detailing and leather handles. The eight-drawer chest is raised on suppressed ball feet and has an estimate of $400-$600.

Also featured is a set of eight barstools with a billiard ball theme: they are numbered 1-8 and have pool balls for feet. The stools representing numbers 6 and 7 are missing one ball apiece, and underneath each barstool appears the phrase “1998 Jumping Jack,” with illegible signatures. The set is estimated at $200-$400.

Collectibles will be in the spotlight at La Belle Epoque Auction House on March 18 in the form of about 30 lots of hard-to-find Lionel and other top name vintage trains. Highlights of this collection include the American Flyer Hamiltonian lot of three, including an American Flyer 4341 Pullman carriage, an American Flyer 4340 club car and an American Flyer 4342 observation car. All are in very good condition, and all are painted a cheerful shade of red with yellow or gold-colored details. Together, they are estimated at $500-$700.

Contemporary art highlights include an unusual mid- to late 20th-century modern patinated aged sculpture of a nude woman, described as “bronze clad.” It is signed at the bottom right of the base and measures 30in tall. Its estimate is $1,200-$1,500.

Equally worthy of mention is a 1917 drawing of a woman, attributed to Joan Miro (Spanish-Catalan, 1893-1983) and signed and dated “Miro 1917″ at the lower right. It’s a relatively small work on paper, measuring 7 by 6.5in. It has an estimate of $700-$1,000.

As many are aware, not long after La Belle Epoque Auction House debuted in 2022, disaster struck in the form of a small fire in the building upstairs. It set off multiple sprinkler systems, and the water ruined ceilings, walls and floors, as well as a significant number of treasured posters and artworks.

Now, after 10 months of major renovations, Manhattan’s La Belle Epoque Auction House has reopened in its glorious 7,000-square-foot space. It is now accepting consignments for upcoming auctions and will soon begin hosting appraisal days to allow potential consigners and collectors to visit, ask questions and receive the focused attention one would expect from a neighborhood auction house.
