NEW YORK (AP) – The longtime director of The Jewish Museum in New York will retire next year.
The art museum said Wednesday that Joan Rosenbaum will step down by the end of June 2011. She has led the museum since 1981.
During her tenure, the 67-year-old director doubled the size of the Fifth Avenue mansion that housed the museum with a seven-story addition. She also expanded its holdings and endowment.
Under Rosenbaum’s guidance, the museum also created the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting.
The museum has more than 26,000 objects related to Jewish culture, including paintings, sculpture, photographs, archaeological artifacts and works on paper.
The museum board has formed a search committee to find a successor.
