LAKEVILLE, Conn. – The next AntiquarianAuctions.com sale, scheduled for November 23, features slightly more than 300 lots of rare books, documents, photographs and artwork. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The sale starts with a select private collection of scientific works, including the third edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Newton was one of the earliest Fellows of the Royal Society; the work of other lesser-known Fellows is also represented, with lots from Sir David Brewster, Sir Charles Blagden, Gilbert Burnet, John Pearson and Peter King.
Other scientific highspots include an 1861 third edition of Darwin’s Origin of Species, estimated at $1,500-$2,500, and also first editions from Michael Faraday and Ernest Rutherford.
Another scientific work on offer is Johann Jorg’s Ueber die Verkrummungen des menschlichen Korpers, estimated at $1,200-$1,800. It has been described as the world’s first scientific orthopedic textbook, and the plates are extraordinary.
Books reflecting travel narratives include native New Yorker R.B. Minturn’s copy of Sir William Sleeman’s Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Official, purchased in Bombay in 1857, just before Minturn left India and while the Indian Mutiny was in its early stages. There is also a group of books with Japanese connections, the most interesting of which is a single lot containing three inscribed copies of works by Japanophile Emily S. Patton. Yet another lot referring to far-flung locales is an 1836 publication relating to Arabic printing in Malta, which carries an estimate of $1,200-$1,800.
The sale also contains a good selection of artwork, photo albums and photographs. A standout in this last category is a large circa-1938 black-and-white portrait photograph of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, estimated at $300-$500. The American leader is pictured reviewing the Pacific fleet while aboard the USS Houston, with his lower half obscured by a fitting on the ship.
