American and English art, antiques, and silver enliven Ahlers & Ogletree April 3-4

E. Ambrose Webster untitled landscape, estimated at $20,000-$25,000 at Ahlers & Ogletree.

ATLANTA — Nearly 780 lots of fine American and English art, along with Continental and Asian art, will be offered at a massive two-day sale at Ahlers & Ogletree on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4. The catalogs are now available for review and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Day 1’s highest-estimated lot is an untitled landscape by E. Ambrose Webster (1869-1935). Webster was one of the founders of the Provincetown art colony in Massachusetts and was a major figure in the American Modernist movement. The oil on canvas depicts an impressionistic landscape with trees, buildings, and mountains, is signed at the lower right, and comes in a gilt frame. It is estimated at $20,000-$25,000.

William Kent (1685-1748) was a painter and designer who heralded the Palladian style of architecture in England. Not only would he create complete interior designs for homes, he would also design their gardens in such a manner that he singlehandedly created the English landscape garden movement. His furniture is highly sought-after today, and this George III giltwood pier table is described by Ahlers & Ogletree as “in the manner of William Kent.” Dating to the 18th century, the table has a faux malachite patterned plaster top and a Vitruvian scroll frieze. It carries an estimate of $15,000-$30,000.

Spanish Baroque artist Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1617-1682) made a career of religious artwork. Moses at the Rock of Horeb is a 19th-century depiction of the famous biblical event done in his style. The monumental work (49.5 by 98.125in) is noted by A&O to have alternative names, including Moses and the Water from the Rock of Horeb and Moses Striking the Rock, examples of which are held in the collection of Hospital de la Caridad in Seville, Spain, for which it was commissioned. The work is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

This Chinese celadon dragon jardiniere with French gilt bronze mounts dates to the late 19th century. It features a flared rim above a tapering body, and is decorated with white dragons and cloud forms. It last sold at New Orleans Auction Gallery in 2021, and is now estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

ATLANTA — To call the late Fred Bentley, Sr., a “book collector” might be the understatement of all eternity. This man, during a lifetime of collecting, managed to acquire works as diverse as a William Shakespeare Second Folio dated to 1632, an Abraham Lincoln-signed appointment document, an 1818 copy of the Declaration of Independence published by Benjamin Owen Tyler, and a first edition printing of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer. All of this — and much, much more — comes together as in excess of 900 lots hit the market on Wednesday, February 7, Thursday, February 8 and Friday, February 9 at Ahlers & Olgletree. The catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The printed plays of William Shakespeare (1564–1616) became a hot commodity in the years just after his passing. With two major releases, the First Folio and Second Folio, the general public could acquire complete copies of his plays for reading at home, thanks to the increase in private printing businesses.

The top lot of Day 1 is an incredible rarity not often seen at auction. Bentley somehow managed to acquire a Shakespeare Second Folio, printed in 1632 by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot, the primary investor in the venture. Examination by Dr. Eric Rasmussen of the University of Nevada, Reno confirms this to be a genuine second edition, correcting many printing errata from the original. It carries an estimate of $200,000-$250,000.

During his lifetime, Fred Bentley amassed a large collection of Charles Dickens works, and more than 150 lots appear as part of Day 1. A particularly interesting lot is a handwritten letter from Dickens to Charles Hicks (1799-1870), his printer-foreman in charge of producing The Pickwick Papers. It was released in book form in 1837 by Bradbury and Evans after having appeared as serialized stories syndicated to local newspapers. The ALS with two Dickens signatures — one in full flourish, one simply C.D. — is estimated at $1,500-$3,000.

The period after the War of 1812 was one of fierce American nationalism. American citizens sought to connect with their revolutionary recent past with flags and other expressions of patriotism. Though copies of the Declaration of Independence had been printed on July 4, 1776, widely distributed versions of the document did not emerge until the latter part of the 1810s. Two competing publishers in Philadelphia vied for those consumer dollars, but Benjamin Owen Tyler (1789-1855) made it to market first in 1818 with his version, which included reproductions of the signatures of all the original signers. Bentley acquired a copy of Tyler’s document, and it goes to the block with a $10,000-$15,000 estimate.

Another favorite of Fred Bentley was Samuel Clemens (1835–1910), popularly known by his pen name of Mark Twain. Day 3 includes more than 100 lots from Clemens, topped off by a spectacular, one of only 200 made, first edition / first printing copy of Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Dated to December 1876, the book is encased in morocco leather with gilt page edges. In generally fine condition, the book is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

ATLANTA – Two self-portraits – one by the Hudson River School artist Daniel Huntington (1816-1906), the other attributed to the French neoclassical painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) – will be offered at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14. They carry estimates of $8,000-$12,000 and $15,000-$25,000, respectively. Day 1 and Day 2 catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Huntington’s 2ft 6in by 2ft 1in half-length portrait depicting the artist holding a palette and confronting the viewer with his gaze is signed at the lower right and dated 1883. The addition of the word Seville suggests it was painted during one of the artist’s several trips to Europe. He rendered a number of self portraits at different stages of his career. Another dated 1891 is in the collection of National Academy of Design, where Huntington first exhibited in 1836.

Antoine-Jean Gros, who studied under Jacques-Louis David, would have been a young man working in Genoa when this much smaller 18 by 14in work was painted. It shows a young male artist in late 18th-century dress holding a palette and brushes as he sketches at an easel. It has a partial label on the verso for the Shepherd Gallery, New York and for an exhibition held in 1975 titled Ingres & Delacroix through Degas & Puvis de Chavannes: The Figure in French Art 1800-1870. Another label identifies the subject as Baron Antoine-Jean Gros.

The Ahlers & Ogletree sale numbers 901 lots across two themed days. The Friday, October 13 session is titled Modernism, Art Glass, Folk Art & Jewish Art and contains 428 lots. The Saturday, October 14 session is titled European, American & Asian Art & Antiques and has 473 lots. Bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

More than 30 pieces have been deaccessioned by the Morris Museum in Augusta, Georgia and will be sold to benefit the museum’s acquisitions fund. They include, estimated at $30,000-$50,000, a life-size bronze of dancing male and female nudes by David Wynne (1926-2014). The Dancers was conceived by the English sculptor in 1971 and cast in 1972 – this one numbered 3 from an edition of 6. Wynne was responsible for numerous public sculptures in both the U.K. and the U.S. and also played a role in Sixties pop culture. Having modeled the Maharishi Mahash Yogi in 1962 and the Beatles in 1964, he was instrumental in arranging their famous meeting in 1968.

An early printed work by David Hockney (b. 1937-), Three Kings and a Queen from 1961, is estimated at $10,000-12,000. Inspired by illustrations from a book on the history of card games, the 9in by 2ft 1in etching and aquatint was one of a series of works Hockney began in the autumn of 1960. The story goes that Alistair Grant, head of printmaking at the Royal College of Art, found an early impression in the drying racks of the print room and entered it, without informing Hockney, into The Graven Image, an exhibition promoting the revival of the etching held by Robert Erskine at St George’s Gallery, London. Hockney had been delighted to win a prize of £100, which funded his first trip to New York in the summer of 1961. He moved to California three years later and the rest is history.

It is thought that Three Kings and a Queen was later printed by Ron Fuller and Peter Matthews at the Royal College of Art in an edition of around 50. This copy, signed and dated to the lower right and titled and numbered to the left, is consigned from an Atlanta collection.

Among the most extraordinary objects in the sale is a monumental Murano glass chandelier produced by the Barovier & Toso workshop circa 1960. Made in two giant tiers with 16 lights each, it measures a mighty 10ft tall by 3ft across. At great expense, it was purpose-made for a theater in Italy. Estimated in the $5,000-$10,000 range, all you need is the space to hang it.

ATLANTA — Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) is best known for his work as a glassmaker and jeweler catering to the Gilded Age elite. However, he was also a formally trained artist of some merit. His oils and watercolors are of particular interest for their choice of subject matter. In addition to typical Hudson River School-style landscapes of upstate New York, Tiffany applied the lessons of French realism to paint scenes of industry along the Hudson River and the slums of New York City. His apparently tranquil scenes of Seabright, New Jersey also depict its mixed-race fishing community and the economic strife faced by African Americans who moved north after the Civil War.

It was one of these Seabright scenes that topped Ahlers & Ogletree’s two-day Fine Estates & Collections auction held at the auction house’s new gallery location on Atlanta’s Upper West Side August 25-26 (Day 1, Day 2).

Carrying the Boat at Sea Bright, N.J depicts four men (probably African Americans) carrying a boat on the sand with buildings in the background. Measuring 3ft by 2ft, it is signed and dated 1888 and has labels on the verso for the Chicago Interstate Industrial Exposition of that year and the Ohio Society of New York. It had much in common with the better-known painting Pushing Off the Boat at Sea Bright, which he painted while staying in New Jersey in 1887.

The painting beat its estimate of $50,000-$75,000 to bring $90,000 ($108,900 with buyer’s premium).

The surprise performers among the 484 lots were Chinese works of art. These included an imperial-style sword or jian with finely tooled pierced gilt bronze mounts decorated with writhing dragons and tendrils and a coral bead to the pommel.

It had some condition issues — it was missing the shagreen hilt, and the scabbard with chilong mount had a split and some losses — but this is a well-known model used by the elite of the Qing court during the reign of the Qianlong emperor (1736-1796). Cataloged as 19th century, but possibly earlier, it was estimated at $400-$900 but changed hands for $55,000 ($66,550 with buyer’s premium).

Sold at $42,500 ($51,425 with buyer’s premium), this time against an estimate of only $1,000-$2,000, was a 16in bronze and parcel gilt wine vessel cast as a mythical bird on spoked wheels supporting a gu-form vase on its back. The so-called “phoenix bearing zun” is a form that dates back to the Han period, although this was probably from the late Qing period, when many honorific copies were made.

Five paintings by the French naïve artist Henri Hecht Maïk (1922-1993) were offered. All came with labels from the Wally Findlay Galleries, which hosted the first US exhibition of Maïk’s paintings in New York in 1964 and continued to hold many successful shows in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, and Paris. A large format oil on canvas measuring 4ft 3in by 3ft 2in led the offering at $17,000 ($20,570 with buyer’s premium). A Yellow Lion, depicting a lion and a cub in a technicolor jungle landscape, was boldly signed and dated [19]72 and titled in French on the verso.

The smaller 9 by 13in oil on a similar theme, Tiger in the Grass, dating to 1980, brought $8,000 ($10,000 with buyer’s premium).

ATLANTA – Just shy of 60 years since Henri Hecht Maïk (1922-1993) held his first exhibition in the US, five paintings by the French naïve artist will be auctioned on Friday, August 25 at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery. Paris-born Maïk referred to himself as a primitive painter of dream-like jungle scenes. The dealership Wally Findlay Galleries hosted the first US exhibition of Maïk’s paintings in New York in 1964 and continued to hold many successful shows in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills and Paris.

The five whimsical pictures were all bought at Wally Findlay Galleries and most carry labels on the reverse.

A large-format oil on canvas measuring 4ft 3in by 3ft 2in carries an estimate of $8,000-$16,000. The Yellow Lion depicting a lion and a cub in a technicolor jungle landscape is boldly signed and dated [19]72 and titled in French on the verso.

Smaller 9 by 13in oils on a similar theme range from $2,000-$4,000 (for Tiger in the Grass, 1980) to $5,000-$7,000 each for Lion and Un Roy.

A watercolor and gouache on paper titled Poussin and dated 1975, depicting a lion, giraffe, zebra and other birds looking down on a chick, is expected to sell at $2,000-$4,000.

The second day of the sale includes French art from the previous century – a portrait of Hortense Eugenie Cecile Bonaparte by Jean Louis Victor Viger Du Vigneau (1819-97). This half-length portrait of the queen consort of Holland wearing a pearl diadem and a gold-trimmed white silk gown is one of several by the artist who made his name painting the elegant men and women of the Second Empire. It is consigned from the estate of the Atlanta lawyer Martin David Merritt (1933-2022) and has an estimate of $25,000-$35,000.
