Rolex watches, Tiffany lamps and an Amphora Crocodile vase enliven Morphy’s Dec. 18-19 auction

DENVER, Penn. – December is traditionally a time to decorate, entertain and display one’s best heirloom silver, crystal and other antique wares. Morphy Auctions is capturing the holiday spirit with a glittering pre-Christmas Fine & Decorative Arts Auction Monday, December 18 and Tuesday, December 19.

Those seeking the ultimate in stocking stuffers are sure to find them within the 200-plus lots of jewelry, watches and coins. Nearly two dozen Swiss wristwatches await bidders, including 12 superlative models by Rolex. A circa-2019 Oyster Perpetual 40mm Cosmograph Daytona 18K gold and stainless-steel model with a black dial has an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

Seventy-seven lots of coins and currency will be offered. Highlights include several 19th-century $20 Gold Liberty coins and something extra special: an 1851 US $50 gold coin known as an Augustus Humbert 887, smoothed with VF details. This scarce coin has been PCGS authenticated and comes to auction with a $20,000-$30,000 estimate.

Nearly 100 art glass lamps will welcome auction guests to Morphy’s gallery. Leading the breathtaking lineup is a Tiffany Studios Peacock leaded-glass table lamp on its matching Peacock base. Both the shade and base are signed and in excellent condition and estimated at $200,000-$300,000. Another great beauty is a Tiffany Studios 18-inch Nasturtium leaded-glass table lamp. Its stunning pattern is composed of some of Tiffany’s most complex types of glass, including streamer, confetti, ripple and drapery. Both the shade and its wonderfully decorated library base are signed. In excellent condition, the lamp is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

For many years, collectors have flocked to Morphy’s Fine & Decorative Arts sales to seek out the least common and most unusual examples of Amphora’s fantasy wares. The top lot is an extremely rare circa-1902 Amphora Crocodile vase, with all of the desired marks. It is actually a book example, appearing in Vreeland’s Monsters and Maidens: Collectors Edition, and stands 16½ inches tall. In mint condition, it is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Apollo celebrates new London saleroom with fine art and antiquities sale Nov. 5

Greek Corinthian bronze helmet, estimated at £60,000-£120,000 ($72,600-$145,200) at Apollo Art Auctions.

LONDON — Apollo Art Auctions has enjoyed tremendous success as the auction branch of Apollo Galleries, London’s renowned specialists in ancient art and antiquities. Since its inception, Apollo Art Auctions has conducted its online auctions at its parent company’s premises, but with its 501-lot sale on Sunday, November 5 will begin conducting both live and online sales from London’s West End at 63-64 Margaret Street. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s top-estimated lot is a circa-600 BCE Greek bronze combat helmet of archaic Corinthian type, hammered from a single sheet of bronze and completely intact, without repairs or restoration. This helmet would have been owned by a wealthy member of the social elite. It is accompanied by a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists, and it is estimated at £60,000-£120,000 ($72,600-$145,200).

A relic of the Cycladic II period of ancient Greek history, this Chalandriani-type female idol made from white marble is dated to circa 2800-2300 BCE. Similar idols can be viewed in the collections of the Louvre and the Archaeological Museum of Athens. It comes with a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists and has an estimate of £60,000-£100,000 ($72,600-$121,000).

In remarkable condition is an amphora from the Attic black-figure period, possibly attributed to the Antimenes Painter, who worked from around 530 to 510 BCE. The amphora has been TL-tested by the CIRAM laboratory in France and is clear on the Art Loss Register database, having been in a U.S. collection for some time. The lot is estimated at £45,000-£90,000 ($54,450-$108,900).

A Roman marble bust of Homer is another star lot in Apollo’s sale. Estimated to be from the Flavian to Antonine period, circa 70-200 CE, the bust has typical damage to the face, believed to be attributed to early Christian vandalism due to its pagan origin. The Homer bust is clear on the Art Loss Register database and comes from the private collection of a London gentleman. Its estimate is £40,000-£60,000 ($48,400-$72,600).

LONDON – Collectors of antiquities, ancient art and material culture know the Apollo Art Auctions name stands for quality and authenticity. The firm’s next event, an Ancient Art, Antiquities and Militaria Auction scheduled for Sunday, September 24, features a wealth of works spanning most of recorded history. Bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

A top prize is the is 2ft 4in Roman marble figure of Cupid (Eros) holding a large bunch of harvested grapes. Finely carved in the round circa 200 A.D., it showcases the artist’s great skill at translating human anatomy to stone. With a provenance to several British and Continental galleries and collections, the estimate is £10,000-£15,000 ($12,490-$18,735).

The aesthetics of the Chinese Tang dynasty (618-907 A.D.) are captured with exceptional elegance and vitality in a 17in terracotta rider on a horse. With a thermoluminescence report confirming its age, it is estimated at £4,000-£6,000 ($4,995-$7,490).

The Gandharan school, which produced the first sculptural representations of the Buddha in human form, is hailed for its artists’ realistic and natural depiction of features “in perfection.” The Kushan period, circa 200-300 A.D., is regarded as its apex. From that timeframe comes two schist carvings: a standing Buddha figure with a halo similar to another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a relief triad portraying Buddha Shakyamuni attended by the bodhisattvas Brahma and Indra. They are estimated at £12,000-£20,000 ($14,980-$24,975) and £10,000-£15,000 ($12,490-$18,735), respectively.

Form and function unite sympathetically in a 12in red-figure amphora made in the 4th century B.C. in Apulia, Magna Graecia. Its decorative program includes images of a young lady of fashion leaning on a pedestal fountain, and a nude, winged Eros holding a phiale and tambourine. The vessel’s line of provenance indicates prior ownership by two ancient art galleries and the estate collection of Tony Gilyard in New York in addition to inclusion in a 2020 sale at Skinner. The estimate is £6,000-£9,000 ($7,490-$11,340).

Armaments of ancient warriors and battles, including many swords, helmets, daggers and spearheads, await collectors in this auction. A circa-1st century B.C. to 1st-century A.D. Roman bronze Montefortino helmet is one depicted in numerous reference books and in the catalog for Christie’s 2002 sale of the legendary Axel Guttmann Collection of Ancient Arms and Armour. It is estimated at £10,000-£15,000 ($12,490-$18,735).

A mighty Viking forged iron sword with a broad blade used to pierce armor or deliver devastating blows in battle has a European provenance that includes the F Haushau collection formed in Germany in the 1970s-80s. Its assigned estimate is £2,500-£3,000 ($3,120-$3,745).

A popular category in every Apollo Art Auctions sale is ancient jewelry. Bursting with history and exquisitely crafted, many pieces are also wearable.

A circa-500-400 B.C. gold ring with a lozenge-shape bezel engraved with a detailed image of a bull is estimated at £6,000-£12,000 ($7,490-$14,980) while a 1st century B.C. Romano-Egyptian hollow-form gold bracelet designed with a Hercules knot and set with a garnet cabochon is estimated £3,000-£6,000 ($3,745-$7,490).

Specialist Dr Ivan Bonchev said: “Egypto-Roman gold jewelry serves as a testament to the cultural exchange and artistic fusion that occurred during the historical period when Egypt was under Roman rule. Combining Egyptian and Roman elements, unique pieces such as this bracelet encapsulate the artistic sensibilities and symbolic motifs of both civilizations.”

Dolphins were sacred animals to the ancient Greeks, who associated the marine mammals with the sun god Apollo. One of the earliest jewelry designs in the sale pays homage to the playful cetaceans: a pair of circa-4th century B.C. Greek Hellenistic gold filigree and lapis lazuli earrings that have a £3,000-£6,000 ($3,745-$7,490) estimate.
