NEW YORK – Bonhams saw incredible results across its five Asia Week New York sales, starting the week with the white-glove – 100% sold – sale of J.J. Lally & Co. properties, which earned 10 times its estimate at $4.2 million, and the Mary and Cheney Cowles collection with 95% of lots sold and achieving five times its estimate at $7.3 million. The top lot of the week, from the Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art sale, was a complete set of portrait bronzes depicting the five patriarchs of the Sakya Order of Tibetan Buddhism, which sold for $2.9 million – nearly six times its estimate.

PARIS – Portrait d’Andre Breton by Max Ernst (1891-1976) and his then-wife Marie-Berthe Aurenche (1906-1960), leads Bonhams‘ La Revolution Surrealiste sale on Wednesday, March 29. The rare joint work by the pair has an estimate of €400,000-€600,000. Following the outstanding results for Bonhams’ sales dedicated to Surrealism in 2021 and 2022 in London, Bonhams is delighted to present the third iteration of the auction, La Revolution Surrealiste, in the birthplace of the movement: Paris. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

LONDON – When they weren’t working on helping to defeat Hitler, the codebreakers at Bletchley Park would often relax by tackling for fun the sort of puzzles that would leave most of us scratching our heads. A newly discovered set of calculations written by Alan Turing in a moment of downtime provide, in the words of Distinguished Professor Jack Copeland, director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing (http://www.AlanTuring.net), “an excellent example of the recreational mathematics that went on at Bletchley Park.” Offered at Bonhams Fine Books & Manuscripts Sale on Wednesday March 29, the newly discovered document is estimated at £20,000-£30,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
